Tania Chin introduces TriVita, wealth, health and wellness company on
Feeds for TriVita [ TriVita ]1. TriVita's Mission: Inspiring People to Experience Wellness
Inspiring people to experience wellness and create wealth for their life purposes
by Michael r. Ellison, CEO & Founder of TriVita, Inc.
Every day at TriVita® our leadership and staff are dedicated to fulfilling this mission. We are passionate about our mission and believe the world must find a healthier way to live. We believe that the diseases we are experiencing are not our heritage, but are influenced by the North American lifestyle. We believe we can change the way we think about health and wellness, that we can move from being treatment-focused to being wellness-focused. We believe every person has purposes that are meaningful and important in their lives – and that wellness and wealth resources can help them fulfill those purposes.
It was about thirteen years ago when I returned home from Mayo Clinic with the words of my physician team ringing in my ears: "Michael, you must change the way you think about health and life. You will not have any quality of life and will die a premature death if you don’t change." I started my wellness journey seeking out the secrets that seemed hidden from me – the secrets to living with optimal wellness.
I sought out health experts from every professional category that would cover physical, emotional and spiritual health. I sought the secrets that would be simple to practice but would be profound in their results. I had reached a level in which wellness seemed impossible for me to achieve – and that lack of wellness was dramatically impacting the quality of my life. It was a period in my life in which I
could not function properly as a husband, father or businessman. I could not really live to fulfill my life purposes without finding these wellness secrets. This journey of discovery brought me to the 10 Essentials of Health and Wellness. One by one I discovered them, applied them and thus began a journey to the greatest wellness of my life.
I wanted others to experience this wellness. I desired to find leading wellness experts who could help develop our nutraceutical products. I wanted to find experts who could write and inspire people to find greater wellness – by providing information that embraced an overall health philosophy. I had a vision of people experiencing wellness who wanted to share their wellness experience with others.
From that desire we founded TriVita 10 years ago with a simple mission: to inspire people to experience wellness and to create wealth for their life purposes. What I mean by wealth is having the resources you need to fulfill important purposes in your life. It is not about extravagant living. It may be as simple as having enough money to buy the quality of foods and supplements that create the most positive health experience you can have.
As you will see on pages 4 and 5, I am going to cities across North America with Brazos Minshew, our Chief Science Officer, to introduce our new Sonoran Bloom™ product line and to inspire people to experience greater wellness. We are launching the line with Nopalea™, a product that promotes optimal cellular health. Strong cells promote strong body system functionality, greatly enhancing a person’s health. Nopalea has powerful anti-inflammatory, detoxification and antioxidant benefits, delivering a better aging result.
My wife has had what I consider an amazing, almost miraculous healing from taking this product during the product trial period. The last couple of years she has suffered extensively from inflammatory arthritis in her feet, to the point that she had to give up all cardio impact exercise – even those considered low-impact like the treadmill and elliptical machine. Nopalea™ addresses the number one topic today among medical science researchers: inflammation. Nopalea has dramatically proven to lower high C-reactive protein, an indicator of inflammation.
We are coming to a city near you to invite you to experience greater wellness through this product and to join our Affiliate network to help launch this product throughout North America. Will you join us in our mission? People all over North America can experience greater wellness with this product and other products in the Sonoran Bloom™ product line. Research from the University of Arizona led us to the
wonderful healing plants in the Sonoran Desert; we have been studying these plants for several years, as well as the ancient peoples who have lived there and enjoyed incredible health with almost no obesity or diabetes.
Please join us in one of the cities listed on page 5. Be sure to RSVP so we can reserve your seat and your free 32 ounce bottle of Nopalea. If you would like to bring a guest, please do so, but RSVP for them as well. These events are all pre-launch introductions; the product will not be released in the catalog until later this year. We have a limited supply for those who are interested in joining us in our mission. At the event, you will also receive a free DVD that is a fully packaged message of all the benefits of the Nopalea product and the Share and Earn Bonus Program.
Enhance your spring rejuvenation wellness program by attending one of these exciting events! All around you are the reminders of nature rejuvenating itself to bloom and blossom – enriching the quality of life for everyone. We are offering special springtime pricing on Energy Now!® and VitaDaily AM/PM™. This is a great opportunity to stock up on these quality products.
May you experience greater wellness in 2009!

2. TriVita is Embracing Wellness
Each month a Member, Business Affiliate and TriVita employee share their insights on health, wellness and more
This new monthly feature creates an open forum for Members, Business Affiliates and TriVita staff to respond to a variety of provocative questions about a wide range of subjects. Join the discussion! Your response could earn you a $25 gift card; see details at the end of
this article.
We're bombarded with negative news. Whether you turn on the television, radio or log onto the Internet – there it is... bad news on the stock market, housing market, job market and even grocery prices at the market. The result is a chain reaction of negativity that spreads doom and gloom to others and may even damage our own ability to function in a healthy manner.
This month's question:
How do you stay positive in tough times?
Cheryl Cole, Member
"I first turn to my spirituality which is a mainstay in my life and which has taken me through every tough time I have endured. But the flesh is sometimes weak so as I am feeding my spirit through prayer, I increase my exercise from three times a week to most days of the week. This always improves my outlook on any situation. I also make sure that I eat six small nutritiously balanced meals a day to boost my post-menopausal metabolism, and take my vitamin supplements religiously.
I'm glad that I added Super Sublingual B-12 to my supplements. It makes me more mentally focused, energized and better able to deal with
the stress of planning a wedding, a job change and preparing to move to another state, all while still working full-time as a nurse practitioner."
Terry Johnston, Business Affiliate
"First, I count my blessings and stay focused on all the things I am grateful for; my wife, our family, our friends and our good mental and physical health.
Second, I work on keeping my brain and body tuned up with proper nutrition and exercise. TriVita's 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness
play an enormous part in this effort. I concentrate on what I can control, how I look after myself, how I treat others, how I spend money and how I can enjoy simple pleasures from everyday living. During tough economic times with so many people affected, it is so important to stay healthy in body and mind. If I can look after myself and somehow inspire someone else each day, that's a great day.
People are looking for ways to reduce their costs, reduce their weight, reduce their stress, reduce illnesses and get back to a simpler,
more wholesome way of life. Through TriVita, we can show them the way."
Pam Knox, Staff Member, Managing editor
"For me, staying positive means staying in a constant state of gratitude. I also surround myself with fun, happy people. I have a very close group of girlfriends who meet on a regular basis. We actually have an agenda at our meetings, but nothing too serious in nature. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life as I have with these grown women!
Don't get me wrong, I don't hide my head in the sand; I am aware of what is going on in the world, but I choose to not focus on those things. I am making financial adjustments in my life, just as everyone is, but I concentrate on the wonderful blessings I have – my beautiful family (and very soon, a grandchild), my friends, my career and the knowledge that God is in control.
Yes, the current times are hard and yes, they may get harder. Still, laughter and having a heart of gratitude not only keeps me from feeling fretful, but also gives me hope for the future."
We invite you to answer our upcoming question:
"What's your favorite memory of summer as a child?"
Your response could earn you a $25 TriVita gift card! Just email your response to vitajournal@trivita.com, or write to: VitaJournal, 16100 N. Greenway Hayden Loop, Ste. 950, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. Please include your Member ID, your address and daytime phone number (along with email address, if you have one).

Source: TriVita VitaJournal March 2009 pg 22. 3. Weight Loss with TriVita's Leanology What makes Leanology capsules so great?
by Dr Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
Leanology weight loss capsules provide nutrients, instead of stimulants, to assist you in your weight loss goals. Moreover, the effectiveness of our weight loss capsules has been confirmed through a clinical study. During the four months of this study, participants lost weight every week and actually gained lean tissue at the same time.
The formula features a four-stage blend of nutrients that target specific areas of concern that impact weight loss.
Stage 1: Energy & metabolism
Key ingredients: Green Tea, L-Theanine, B Vitamins, Vitamin C, Manganese
Thermogenic nutrients increase lean body mass in older age groups – even without exercise. This is a critical component to the formula because as one ages, lean muscle mass becomes more difficult to attain – and lean muscle mass is essential for a healthy metabolism.
For example, L-Theanine helps increase our body's natural energy-producing capabilities. Mitochondria, sometimes described as "cellular power plants," are found within our cells. They help convert food molecules into energy. L-Theanine is an antioxidant that specifically recharges the mitochondria to help it reproduce energy.
Stage 2: Cortisol & anti-stress
Key ingredients: GABA, Korean Ginseng, Poria Cocos, Vitamin D, Dimethylglycine, Copper gluconate
Stress is a problem at any age, though stress-related obesity seems to be more prevalent after age 40. Many trophic or "muscle-building" hormones begin to decline as we age. Stress accelerates this process. Fat-storage hormones are produced in response to stress.
Modern biochemistry has discovered that a protein receptor in your brain called a "GABA receptor" is responsible for stress sensitivity. By increasing GABA, a simple amino acid, we reduce the impact of stress on our nervous system and hormone balance.
Stage 3: Appetite control
Key ingredients: Glucommanan, Biotin, Magnesium, Zingiber rhizome (Ginger)
Leanology contains specific nutrients that signal your brain to recognize signs of "fullness" earlier in the meal. It also restores the balance of signaling chemicals from your stomach to your brain. These chemicals can be weakened after a long, exhausting, stressful day. Therefore, Leanology minimizes evening cravings.
Weight gain is a direct response to a calorie surplus. If you do not burn the calories you consume, they will be left behind as fat – especially if the calories are from unhealthy sources. Leanology works to minimize your cravings and therefore assist you in lowering your total caloric intake.
Stage 4: Blood sugar control
Key ingredients: Garcinia camobogia, Gymnema sylvestre, Bitter melon, Cinnamon bark, Alpha Lipoic acid, Chromium polynicotinate, Vanadyl sulphate, Zinc gluconate
Blood sugar control is the most critical component of any weight loss program. Elevated blood sugar causes the body to store sugar as fat rather than using it as energy. Leanology contains nutrients that help to utilize the carbohydrates and sugar we consume as energy – to keep them from being stored as fat. It also helps reduce the cravings for sweets and carbohydrates.
We are more likely to develop insulin resistance as we age. The more processed and refined food we eat, the more insulin we require to metabolize it. The more insulin in our blood, the less responsive our cells become. As we age, this continual exposure wears out our tolerance for refined carbohydrates and sugar, and reduces our sensitivity to insulin. Therefore we are less likely to convert sugar and carbohydrates into energy, and more likely to convert them into fat.
Take Control of Your Health
- Commit yourself to the process of weight loss
- Learn the important steps you will need:
- Calorie content of common foods
- Calories burned in common exercises
- The effect of stress, sleep and hydration on weight
- Use Leanology Capsules for effective weight loss
- Use Leanology Appetite Control Chews as needed
- Use Leanology Shakes to control calorie intake
- Continue your healthy aging supplements
- Most important: Record the reason WHY you want to lose weight. Hint: the more compelling the "why," the more likely you are to be successful!

Source: TriVita Weekly Wellness Report March 28 2009 4. TriVita Article: Don't Let a Weak Economy Weaken Your Health
Why smart lifestyle habits are even more important now
Are you worried about jobs, housing or shrinking investments? These days it seems most of us are, and it might be easy to let this stress push aside healthy habits. The best advice in one word is, don't. It's more important than ever to protect your health by continuing to make smart lifestyle choices.
Here's a look at some of the ways that financial woe can chip away at the best health habits, and some strategies for fighting back.
Too much stress, not enough money?
In the workforce, the economic meltdown has led to overwork for many who still have jobs. This burden makes it easy to trade healthy meals for a fast-food filler, to reach for "comfort" in high-calorie treats, to skip exercise and to look for escape through drinking or smoking.
If you find yourself or a loved one starting to develop one or more of these behaviors, there are several steps you can take to get back on track. Some counter-strategies:
- Fix healthy lunches and snacks at home, and keep them on hand every day. You'll be safeguarding your health and your wallet by not paying for over-processed, packaged foods.
- Avoid sugary, high-fat foods and snacks. They'll just pack on the pounds and leave you feeling low.
- Can't afford your gym membership? Walking is free and great for you; ditto taking the stairs instead of the escalator, working out at home to DVDs from your local library, dancing (solo or paired) and dozens of other possibilities – get creative.
- Smoking, as you know, is a killer for your body and wallet. What a great, moneysaving time to stop. Ask your healthcare provider about free local resources to help.
- Alcohol does not relieve stress – it boosts your stress level, and can lead to a cycle of over eating, smoking and other dangerous habits, such as more drinking. Save your money and tip a few glasses of water instead.
Preventive health today, savings tomorrow
Given the wobbly economy, who can afford to miss work, or put themselves at risk of illness by not safeguarding their health? If nothing else, the financial incentives for staying healthy should make us all even more determined to eat right, exercise and keep taking quality supplements. It's encouraging to know that many people who use supplements intend to keep right on going.
In a recent survey, a majority of supplement users said they would maintain their daily regimen. And of those people, a sizable number said that the supplements are "an essential part of my wellness regimen, and I cannot do without them."
"It's encouraging to see that, despite the current economic climate, such a large percentage of adults are continuing to invest in their
health by including dietary supplements as a part of their wellness regimen," said a researcher with the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), which sponsored the survey. The CRN staffer continued, "Engaging in preventive health measures today, such as incorporating supplements into a healthy lifestyle, may help avoid potential healthcare costs down the road."
The smart 72%: are you one of them?
Avoiding future healthcare costs is the reason that many people, instead of reducing their healthy habits, are now taking an even more proactive role in protecting their health. A survey of over 10,000 people conducted in the U.S. indicated that fully 72% were taking preventive steps to stay healthy. These steps included taking vitamin and nutrient supplements, exercising more and eating healthier.
Clearly, economic woes should motivate us all to keep up or increase our healthy lifestyle habits, including taking the highest quality
supplements. After all, no matter what's happening in the world of finance, who can afford to cut back on health?

6. TriVita Celebrates Women's History Month
Celebrating women's contributions to health
Not so long ago, women were barred and discouraged from pursuing careers in medicine. In honor of Women's History Month, we're spotlighting some true pioneers: These women faced social barriers, discrimination and other hardships, yet persevered to make great strides in medicine and healthcare. Not only did they change their world, they created a new world of possibilities for future generations of women.
A reformer in the field of nursing
Florence Nightingale
Against the wishes of her parents, Florence Nightingale chose to become a nurse, a profession which was considered "un-ladylike." When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, stories about conditions at the front prompted Nightingale to volunteer for service. Through her efforts, sanitary conditions at the hospitals improved greatly and casualties decreased.
Upon her return to England, Nightingale established a school of nursing; her greatest contribution was to make nursing a respectable
profession. Her 1860 book, "Notes on Nursing," is still in print today. An accomplished statistician, she is also credited with inventing
the pie chart.

7. TriVita Article: How Much Caffeine Is In Your Daily Diet?
This stimulant can actually "zap" your energy in the long run
North Americans love their coffee. Whether you live in a big city or small town, you can always find plenty of places to get your daily
caffeine fix. While some people know when to put a lid on their coffee drinking, there are many self-confessed "addicts" who need continual jolts of caffeine just to make it through the day.
If you have more than 500 to 600 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day, or about four to seven cups of coffee, the consequences can include restlessness, anxiety, headaches and stomachache.
More and more people are drinking so-called "energy" drinks which contain large doses of caffeine. Energy drinks can boost the heart rate
and blood pressure, dehydrate the body and prevent sleep. What they don’t do is give you healthy, lasting energy.
Energy Now!® is a great natural alternative because it lets you enjoy quick energy without the stimulants. Find out how much caffeine

Source: TriVita VitaJournal March 2009 pg 15 8. TriVita Article: Colorectal Cancer - It's Common and Very Curable In Its Early Stages
Should you be screened?
By Dr. Samuel N. Grief
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer-related death. Leading healthcare professionals realize the importance of educating the public about this deadly disease and that is why March has been designated National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Understandably, the colon and rectum are neither glamorous nor easy topics to discuss with your healthcare provider. Nonetheless, it is extremely important that you or your provider bring this topic up during one of your next medical visits to ensure you will be properly
assessed and screened for any colorectal disease.
Why should I be screened for colorectal cancer?
Most colorectal cancers arise from pre-existing polyps. These polyps occur in approximately 30% of adults age 50 years and older and occur more commonly as we age. The goal of colorectal cancer screening is to identify early cancers and polyps in order to limit the spread of disease and save lives.
How often should I be screened?
Routine screening should occur on the following basis and by one or more of the following methods:
- Annual testing of your stool for hidden blood [also known as fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years
- Colonoscopy every ten years
FOBT is the easiest to perform and can be done in the privacy of your own home. Application of a stool specimen to special testing cards on three consecutive days is the most common way of performing this test.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy is done at your doctor’s office and requires brief preparation with a stool cleanser or laxative. The instrument, a sigmoidoscope, is a short, flexible tube that uses a fiber optic light to see up to about 60 cm (about 2 feet) inside your rectum and colon. This procedure will not detect any disease within the colon above this distance. Most medical societies recommend combining flexible sigmoidoscopy with FOBT every five years to enhance screening.
Colonoscopy is the best test for identifying colon polyps. Medical authorities recognize this procedure as inherently the most risky, too.
While perforation of the colon may occur, it is quite rare. Also, most physicians performing this procedure place their patients under conscious sedation, meaning you will be awake but not truly alert. This may place you at increased risk for lung and heart complications if you have underlying lung and heart disease.
What can I do to prevent colorectal cancer?
There are several things that may lessen your risk for developing disease of the colon and rectum:
- Keep the weight off – many scientific studies confirm the association between obesity and risk for colorectal cancer.
- Lower your fat intake – less fat in one’s diet may decrease the risk for developing colon polyps, the precursor to cancer.
- Eat less red meat – there is some controversy here, but red meat has very little fiber and slows up the bowel function, allowing toxins to fester within your bowels. Additionally, one scientific study confirmed an association between red meat consumption and increased colon cancer in women.
- Increase your dietary fiber – fiber is great for your overall health and improves bowel function. However, it has not been scientifically-proven to lower your risk for colorectal cancer.
- Vitamin and mineral supplements – Vitamin D and calcium have been scientifically shown to help reduce the development of colon polyps. Calcium seems to be the strong partner here, but Vitamin D assists calcium absorption within the intestines. That’s why I recommend a calcium supplement for bone health and general well-being, especially as we age.
- Other medicines, such as aspirin or its cousins, are potentially useful to lower the risk for colorectal disease, but their side effects of bleeding and kidney and liver problems make them unsuitable for most people. Lastly, cholesterol-lowering medicines known as statins have also been found in several studies to have a link to lower risk for colorectal disease.

9. TriVita's Leanology® fueled John's 53-pound Weight Loss
This drag-racing champ is a winner at dropping pounds the smart way
When it comes to cars, John can do just about anything, and has, for over 40 years. His weight was another story entirely – until he tried the Leanology Smart Weight Loss System.
A former drag-racing champion, the New York resident has devoted much of his life to just about anything automotive. He was in the auto repair business for over 40 years, raced cars and is still heavily involved in show cars. Although excess weight was an unwelcome passenger for the past 10 years, he couldn't lose weight and keep it off until recently.
John has really been around the track when it comes to other weight loss programs. He tried one that sells packaged food, and he did drop
some pounds, "But as soon as I was back to real food, the weight came back." He tried a lowcarbohydrate plan with the same result: all the
weight returned after he went back to normal eating. Yet more fad eating plans and diets came and went, and though the weight always went, it always came back.
Finally, last summer John decided to try Leanology. "I started off taking just one Leanology capsule once a day. I lost a few pounds and leveled off , so I started taking two capsules twice a day. The weight started coming off nicely – and it was so easy!" He gradually worked up to taking three capsules twice per day. "The weight has been continually coming off at a steady pace," he reports. By early 2009, John had shed a total of 53 pounds!
"Leanology is the easiest thing I've ever done."
"If you are determined to lose the weight and be healthy, you CAN do it," he affirms. Health is especially important to John, because his
heart is sensitive to any ingredient that would speed up his heart rate, or make him feel jittery. That's why many diet products are out of the question. That's another reason he's so happy with Leanology.
Leanology Weight Loss Capsules are stimulant free, and contain the exclusive ingredient blend Converta™, The Fat Burning Accelerator.
"Converta is amazing," reports John. "Leanology is the easiest thing I've ever done."
John knows from experience that healthy eating is a must. He often chooses oatmeal for breakfast, enjoys a balanced lunch, and snacks on fresh fruit or vegetables. He keeps his late-day meals small, and might add in or substitute a tasty Leanology Nutritional Shake.
Take it from a weight-loss champion: "If you set goals and make being healthy a part of your life schedule, you will succeed."

10. TriVita Article:Skin Disorders and What They Mean Attractive skin is really a reflection of inner health. Good health comes only from healthy habits. This is a natural law.
by Dr Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
Friends and enemies
Collagen and healthy fats are best-friends to healthy skin. They give skin its firmness and elasticity. Collagen is made from nutrients such as Vitamin C and glucosamine. Healthy fats in your skin come from healthy fats in your diet, including supplemental essential fatty acids. Fats in your skin are protected by antioxidants such as Vitamin E and those found in green tea.
Free radicals are your skin’s enemies. These naturally occurring inflammatory substances overwhelm and harm your skin. As a result, your skin may become looser, weaker, less elastic and drier. Remember, when collagen and fat loss is making your skin look bad it is also aging your entire body.
Your skin becomes the battlefield between free radical damage and nutrients supporting healthy skin. Trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress create free radicals. Antioxidants from your diet and dietary supplements neutralize free radicals. When nutrient reserves fail, skin disorders begin. The most common skin disorders include eczema, psoriasis and seborrhea dermatitis.
Eczema
Eczema is inflammation of the skin. The term eczema has come to be associated with a specific type of dermatitis, called atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, non-contagious condition.
Symptoms: Itchy, inflamed skin.
Causes: Although eczema can develop at any age, it is most common in infants and children. It is estimated that 65% of people with eczema develop symptoms in the first year of life, and 90% develop symptoms before age five. The condition often improves in adulthood, but 50% of those affected as children are affected throughout life. Eczema is closely associated with asthma and hay fever. All together, they are called atopy. Atopy tends to run in families.
Responds to: Eczema responds well to essential fatty acid supplements, which help keep histamine levels low and nourish the fat pads under the skin. It also responds well to anti-stress herbs called adaptogens and Vitamin B-12, which help protect the collagen links from free radical destruction. Vitamin D and aloe vera have been used to balance the immune system response to anxiety and stress – known triggers for eczema.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition.
Symptoms: Psoriasis is characterized by scaling and inflammation. The inflamed skin is most commonly found on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. It may cause pain and discomfort by cracking.
Causes: Currently, it is estimated that 5.5 million people in the U.S. have psoriasis. Psoriasis may be a disorder of the immune system. A type of white blood cell that normally protects the body against infection and disease triggers inflammation and causes skin to shed too rapidly. Psoriasis flare-ups may be triggered by a variety of factors, including infection, toxins, climate, certain medications and stress.
Up to 11% of people with psoriasis develop a condition called psoriatic arthritis when the inflamed areas of the skin are accompanied by joint inflammation.
Responds to: Psoriasis responds well to nourishment with essential fatty acids such as those found in OmegaPrime. Stress protection with adaptogens and Vitamin B-12 is also helpful in many people. Vitamin D has also been used for people with psoriasis to balance the immune system response to stress.
Seborrhea dermatitis
Seborrhea dermatitis is a chronic skin condition.
Symptoms: Scaly, itchy rash. Most commonly affected areas are along the hairline, in and behind the ears, on the eyebrows, around the nose and on the chest. Dandruff is a type of seborrhea dermatitis.
Causes: Common skin yeast organisms, called Malassezia, may play a role in seborrhea dermatitis. It seems to run in families and is associated with disorders of the immune system and the nervous system. Seborrhea dermatitis is strongly associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Responds to: Seborrhea dermatitis responds to supplementation with essential fatty acids as do many other skin conditions. The EFAs in OmegaPrime help reduce inflammation, nourish the fat pads under the skin and soothe the immune system. Seborrhea, like most other skin conditions, is triggered by stress. Protection against stress with adaptogens and Vitamin B-12 is often helpful.

The Twin Puzzles of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
How B vitamin supplementation may help by Dr. Scott Conard
Many puzzles are yet to be solved by modern medicine. As we continue to seek causes and solutions for the ills that plague mankind, confusion still swirls around two of the more "mysterious" ailments: chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FMS).
During National Chronic Fatigue Awareness Month in March, it's appropriate to look at these two issues together, since they're often
paired in medical literature. They have some important traits in common:
- We don't know what causes either CFS or fibromyalgia
- They share several symptoms
- There is no cure
The confusion around these two syndromes is fed by their overlapping nature: It's estimated that up to 70% of people diagnosed with CFS
also fit the clinical guidelines for FMS, and vice versa. Most people with CFS have some kind of pain, which is a major symptom of FMS. And most people with FMS report fatigue, a major symptom of CFS. No wonder even doctors can be unsure which is which.
Vitamin B-12 and folic acid for managing symptoms
We do know, however, that many physicians and researchers (along with patients) support supplementation – including Vitamin B-12 and
folic acid – as an important part of managing symptoms. Here's a thumbnail look that helps explain why:
CFS: As the name suggests, this is a disorder that causes extreme fatigue. This fatigue is not the tiredness that goes away after you rest. Instead, it lasts a long time and limits your ability to do ordinary daily activities.
Symptoms of CFS include fatigue for six months or more, and other problems such as muscle pain, memory problems, headaches, pain in multiple joints, sleep problems, sore throat and tender lymph nodes. It is most common in women in their 40s and 50s, but anyone can have it. It can last for years.
FMS: Fibromyalgia makes you feel tired and causes muscle pain and "tender points." Tender points are places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms or legs that hurt when touched. Other symptoms can include trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called "fibro fog."
No one knows what causes fibromyalgia. Anyone can get it, but it is most common in middle-aged women. People with rheumatoid arthritis and
other autoimmune diseases are especially prone to fibromyalgia.
Supporting mental function with B vitamins
Notice that both syndromes can affect mental function: memory and thinking problems can arise, and this may be a key to the use of B vitamins. As you may know, the medical links between B vitamins and brain function are strong and well documented.
So, it isn't surprising that healthcare professionals in both traditional and alternative medicine, including experts in CFS and FMS, support the use of B vitamins and folic acid to help manage symptoms.
If you or a loved one have, or suspect you have, one of these confusing syndromes, it's important to know that both are much more than just being tired, or having some muscle pain. CFS and FMS are often misunderstood, and deserve attention and treatment. I urge you to consult with your healthcare professional, and to see how the highest quality B vitamin supplementation might help.

12. TriVita on L-Phenylalanine
Let's Separate Facts from Fantasy - This essential protein provides a wealth of health benefits
By Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
Myth: L-Phenylalanine (LPA) causes strokes and is generally bad for you because it is an ingredient in toxic artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame.
Fact: L-Phenylalanine is an essential protein. Your thyroid activity depends on a rich supply of LPA. Phenylalanine improves mood, helps your body reduce pain – especially migraine pain – and improves mental function. LPA is found in TriVita's Energy Now!® product.
Factoid: Just as fire can warm our homes, it can also cause destruction in a house fire. LPA is an essential protein that fuels energy production; aspartame is an artificial sweetener that causes destructive inflammation in test animals.
Phenylalanine and energy
Energy is more than just a passing mood. It is a complex series of biochemical and electrical processes very much like a long series of
dominos all lined up and ready for the first one to be tipped over. The first step in the production of energy is to select a healthy
source of basic nutrients: sugars, proteins and fats. Sugars provide a rapid but brief donation of energy. Proteins donate five times more
energy than sugar. Healthy fats donate eight times more! These three nutrients make up the basis for energy production. The end result
of selecting the proper foods and supplements contributes to the way you feel and how much energy you have for your day.
In order for you to feel energetic you must tip over that first domino by selecting healthy foods. Supplements may also help support your metabolism. With dominos, each one that falls requires the energy from the domino before, then donates energy to the one after. In human metabolism energy begets energy in much the same way: Each transition donates energy to the next step in the energy cycle.
We must break down the nutrients from our foods into specific chemicals. That's where LPA enters into the picture. This marvelous protein
feeds your energy cycle, your thyroid hormone cycle and balances your brain chemistry.
LPA breaks down into Tyrosine to feed your thyroid. Healthy thyroid function makes you feel energetic. LPA also protects you against stress. Reducing stress helps you feel energetic. Next, LPA feeds the production of a brain chemical called phenyethylamine (PEA). PEA is very special.
Do you remember your first kiss? If you are like most people your world was aglow with enthusiasm for days afterward. You probably had significant energy and you needed very little sleep. You likely lost your appetite and experienced less pain. These are all the effects of PEA, which is also called the hormone of love!
LPA creates Tyrosine for healthy thyroid function. LPA also creates PEA and gives you a feeling of endless energy while helping to reduce pain, appetite and fatigue. Then, PEA donates energy to the next dominos in the chain and creates other, even more potent brain chemicals: L-Dopa, Dopamine and nor-Epinephrine.
This is called the dopamine cascade. Think of it as the final series of dominos in the energy chain. In the dopamine cascade the result of
LPA metabolism is not just one domino falling. The end result of the dopamine cascade is an energy donation to as many as 4 trillion nerve
synapses – tiny reservoirs of energy all over your body – from your head to your toes.
Energy becomes energy
The renowned actress, Sarah Bernhardt, once said that life begets life and energy becomes energy. The type of energy Ms. Bernhardt described was euphoria generated by optimism, anticipation and accomplishment. This energy is fueled by healthy sugars, fats and proteins – especially LPA: the energy protein.

14. A Summary of TriVita Article Bring Back Breakfast
Bring Back Breakfast - The Neglected Meal
Gone are the days when it was unthinkable to start the day without a good hearty breakfast. Now, people have more excuses than you can shake a spatula at for why they can't or don't eat a morning meal. Do any of these sound familiar?
- I don't have time
- I'm not hungry in the morning.
- I'm trying to lose weight
- I don't like breakfast foods.
- When I eat breakfast, I'm more hungry mid-morning.
The Case for Breakfast
We've all heard it: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Here are some reasons why:
Breakfast is the time to refuel. After fasting for the 8-12 hours after dinner and during sleep, your body needs to replenish its energy supply. Muscles also rely on glucose for a portion of their energy.
Eating breakfast is associated with better attitudes about work and school. People who pass on a morning meal are often tired, irritable, or restless in the morning. And kids who skip breakfast tend to be tardy or absent from school more often than those who eat breakfast regularly.
Eating breakfast is associated with greater productivity in the late morning. Kids who eat a morning meal perform better in school than those who don't. This is because morning hunger interferes with concentration, problem solving, and muscle coordination.
Eating breakfast regularly is associated with maintaining a healthful weight. According to the American Dietetic Association, kids who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight. There has also been extensive research to show that adults who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight and obese.
Breakfast can add to the healthfulness of your diet. For example, research has found that people who eat breakfast regularly have higher total intakes of the following:
- Vitamin C
- Calcium
- Thiamin
- Riboflavin
- Iron
- Fiber
No More Excuses
Now it's time to let go of those excuses.
I don't have time. A little planning may help.
I'm not hungry in the morning. Eat something small, such as toast, juice, or an egg, at breakfast time. Bring along a snack for when you are hungry mid-morning.
I'm trying to lose weight. Several studies have found that people who eat breakfast tend to weigh less and be more successful at losing weight than those who do not eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast sets you up to be ravenously hungry later in the day, which can lead to overeating. Of course, you still need to make healthful choices. Be aware of portion sizes. For example, many bagel-shop bagels and muffins are much higher in calories than you think. Also, stay away from some of the traditional, fatty breakfast foods, including:
- Bacon
- Breakfast sausage
- Hash browns
- Biscuits with gravy
I don't like breakfast foods. Anything can be a breakfast food:
- Last night's leftovers and a piece of fruit
- Grilled cheese and tomato sandwich
- English muffin with peanut butter and banana
- Bagel topped with avocado spread and sliced fresh tomato
When I eat breakfast, I'm more hungry mid-morning. Hunger pangs are a healthy, normal signal from your body. Bring along a snack for these times. Or try eating a little more protein or fat with breakfast to keep you satiated longer.

Powerful carotenoids, such as Lutein, Lycopene and Astaxanthin
A probiotic blend of six types of "friendly" bacteria to support the health of your gastrointestinal system and boost your immune system
Fiber from whole foods – oat and rice bran, barley and flax seed – to help support colon health and protect you against illness

Save lots of time and effort.
One reason why so many people don't get enough fruits and vegetables is all the time and work involved. There's driving, shopping and all the prep work – washing, peeling, coring, cutting, cooking, etc. – all that for up to five fruits and vegetables each day. Whew! That's a lot of time and effort compared to simply mixing up and enjoying a tall glass of NutraFruits in mere seconds.
The answer to the everyday problem – a quick and easy drink
It's well known how important it is to eat enough fruits and vegetables everyday. However according to surveys conducted in 2005 by the CDC (Center for Disease Control), more than 75% of Americans failed to meet the USDA's recommendation of five (5) servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
The answer to this daily challenge is TriVita NutraFruits. It's the quick and easy way to help you reach your nutritional goals.
You are what you drink
Getting enough fruits and vegetables is so important to your health. Diets rich in these foods help:
Turn back the clock on premature aging
Protect against heart disease
Soothe digestion, support the nervous system and immune system
Promote health looking skin.

Then, from faraway lands, TriVita NutraFruits adds these exotic, treasured fruits:
Mangosteens
From Southeast Asia, this fruit contains xanthones, a natural and powerful antioxidant. Xanthones have received a lot of attention for their powerful ability to help neutralize and eliminate free radicals and thereby support healthy cellular function.
Goji Berries
Have been used by Himalayan healers and in Asian medicine for thousands of years. Goji berries contain a wide array of antioxidants, polysaccharides and key phytonutrients that work together to help protect the body’s healthy cells and support its immune and nerve functions.
Acai Berries
Found in the Brazilian rainforests, these berries have higher antioxidant levels than almost any other plant food. Acai berries also contain polyphenols, phytonutrients and anthocyanins to neutralize free radicals that threaten the health of numerous body systems and organs. And their anthocyanins are so plentiful, their levels are as much as 30 times higher than those found in red wine.
Source: TriVita.com 16. TriVita Article: Eating for Energy by Dr Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
The World Health Organization (WHO) states, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is the ability to lead a socially and economically productive life."
Does that describe you? Or, like many people in North America, are you just too tired to think about being “socially and economically productive”?
If you feel too tired to do much more than read this article, don’t feel alone. Up to 85% of the people that visit a doctor for any reason also complain of being chronically tired. It seems that we are in the middle of an energy crisis that has nothing to do with petroleum production!
When we talk about energy we need to distinguish the difference between the ability to survive and the feeling of being energetic. We must admit that even the sickest person is converting nutrients to energy in order to survive. Yet, we want to do more than survive – we want to feel energetic. We want to have the energy to dream and then have the energy to live those dreams. We want to feel our best every day. Is that possible?
Eating for energy: fats, protein and carbohydrates
As I mentioned, energy comes from the way our body burns nutrients such as fats, protein and carbohydrates. These nutrients must be metabolized. The word metabolism is from a Greek word that describes the process of creating energy from food. This description gives us the first hint as to how we can create and sustain an energetic feeling – by balancing our diet every day.
A balanced diet must include:
- 7 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables (for adults)
- 30+ grams of high quality protein
- 20 to 35 grams of fiber
Sugars from the foods we eat provide us with ready energy, but it doesn’t last very long. Proteins are converted to energy at a much slower pace and provide us with a more stable supply of energy – five times as much energy per gram as sugar.
However, when it comes to providing energy, fat is the undisputed champion. Fat provides us with stamina. It burns slowly and steadily up to eight times longer than sugar. So for stamina that lasts all day and into the evening hours, select foods high in “good” fats.
Many experts say that we should get as much as 30% of our total calories per day from fat. This may mean more than 70 grams of fat for a 2,200 calorie per day diet. That’s a lot of fat! But don’t reach for the French fries just yet. You see, all foods contain fat. Fat is as important for plants as it is for humans. So, select fats from foods that are known for high energy, such as:
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Olives
- Avocados (guacamole)
- Fatty fish
All foods (including vegetables and legumes) contain some fat.
Feeling your best every day
Fuel the fires of your metabolism by eating high-energy foods. Stoke those fires by exercising at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Eat a healthy breakfast and, above all, be crystal-clear about your reasons for wanting more energy.
Being energetic and feeling a zest for life is more than merely being alive. It is a sense that you have the resources you need to accomplish whatever you want: to thoroughly seize the day while you work for your dreams. Feeling energetic inspires optimism and healthy self-esteem. Feeling energetic makes you happy and gives you hope. Follow these simple steps to feel your best every day!
Take Control of Your Health
- Include good fats in your diet:
- Mono- and poly-unsaturated oils (e.g. olive and sesame)
- Nuts – be sure they are not rancid (spoiled)
- Fish – salmon, halibut, tuna and other cold-water fish
- Olives – a whole-food source of olive oil and Vitamin E
- Avocado – nutritious and filled with antioxidants
- Avoid bad fats:
- Trans fats
- Hydrogenated fats
- Saturated fats: a little is OK but never over 20% DV (Daily Value)
- Take your supplements:

Are you prepared for a heart attack emergency?
Check your knowledge with this fact sheet from the national heart, lung and blood institute
Discomfort or a heavy feeling in the chest can signal a heart attack.
TRUE: Chest pain is the most commonly reported heart attack symptom. But the pain may not feel severe or "stabbing." It may feel more like a discomfort. Chest
discomfort may be accompanied by or follow shortness of breath. Discomfort or pain may be felt in other areas of the upper body, such as one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Other symptoms that can occur include breaking out in a "cold sweat," nausea or light-headedness.
Women do not frequently experience heart attacks.
FALSE: Heart disease is the number one killer of American women, and nearly half of all heart attack deaths happen to women. Furthermore, women are less likely to survive a heart attack than are men. (Women are less likely than men to believe they’re having a heart attack and more likely to delay in seeking emergency treatment.)
Some people who are experiencing the symptoms of a heart attack may wait hours or even days before seeking needed medical care.
TRUE: Many people do not recognize their symptoms as life-threatening. That's why it's important to know the warning signs and take action quickly. (See warning signs below.)
Being treated within about an hour of the first symptoms can make a signifi cant difference.
TRUE: Heart attack deaths and heart damage can often be avoided when treatment begins within an hour of when the symptoms started.
Many heart attack victims say their heart attack wasnt what they'd expected.
TRUE: Most people expect a heart attack to be a sudden intense pain, but often heart attacks start slowly as a mild pain.
Most heart attacks occur in people over 65.
TRUE: However, 45% of all heart attacks occur in people under age 65. And 5% occur in people under age 40.
The major issue in delay is how long it takes for emergency medical personnel to find the address and deliver the patient to the hospital.
FALSE: The most significant portion of delay time is due to patient delay, the time it takes for an individual to decide to ask for help. Sometimes a patient does not want to believe anything bad is happening and dismisses the seriousness of the symptoms. Sometimes people do not know the symptoms of heart attack.
| Heart Attack Warning Signs |
- Chest discomfort: Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than
a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing,
fullness or pain.
- Discomfort in other areas of the upper body: Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back,
neck, jaw or stomach.
- Shortness of breath: Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it can also occur before chest discomfort.
- Other symptoms: May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or light-headedness.
Note to Women: As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.
even if you’re not sure its a heart attack, you should still have it checked out. Fast action can save lives – maybe your own. |

22. TriVita Article: Are You Getting Enough Nutrients in Your Diet?
by Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief Science Officer
As you review your diet of the past week, ask yourself, “Did I eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables every day?” The recommended amounts are five servings for children, seven servings for women and nine servings for men. If you can say “yes” – congratulations! If you are like most people you did not reach that goal. And, if you are like most of us, you did not eat all of your fruits and vegetables from an organic source; so, the fruits and vegetables may have been lacking in nutritional value.
Staying on top of our nutrient reserve is important. Our bodies make millions of new cells every day: heart cells, brain cells, bone and blood cells. Every time a cell dies it should be replaced. If you do not have the right amount of nutrients to construct a new cell you will either make an incomplete cell or none at all. The outcome is bad in either case, so we really need to keep all nutrients on board at all times. This is why we suggest a multiple vitamin and mineral supplement.
Supplements
The word supplement means in addition to something – to make up for a deficiency. Vitamin and mineral supplements should be taken in addition to a healthy diet. They make up for the deficiency we face due to the poor nutrient density in our foods. Supplements also help out when our diet is less than perfect.
The simplest way to help support your nutrition is to take a general multi-vitamin and mineral supplement that provides a broad range of nutrients at standard nutritional levels. However, please keep the following points in mind:
- Some supplements contain very high doses of certain nutrients. When you take nutrients in extremely high doses, you are no longer in the world of nutritional supplementation and have passed into the riskier world of megadose treatment.
- Calcium and magnesium minerals are very bulky, and few multi-vitamin/mineral supplements provide the daily requirement. These minerals generally must be taken in the form of additional pills. Note: It isn't possible for your body to absorb a day's worth of calcium in a single dose. At least two doses are necessary.
The most common nutritional deficiencies
| Calcium |
Helps with bone density, muscle contraction and digestion |
| Chromium |
Helps with blood sugar control |
| Folate |
Helps protect against birth defects, heart disease and depression |
| Magnesium |
Helps protect against high blood pressure, kidney stones and migraine headaches |
| Vitamin B-6 |
Helps protect against heart disease, depression and arthritis |
| Vitamin C |
Helps with detoxification, immune system health and connective tissue |
| Vitamin B-12 |
Helps protect against anemia and fatigue. Helps with nerve health and energy |
| Vitamin D |
Involved in bone and skin health and helps protect against diabetes and obesity |
| Vitamin E |
Helps improve circulation |
| Zinc |
Helps protect against acne, ADD/ADHD, the common cold and macular degeneration |
Very few of us are so deficient in these nutrients as to show symptoms of outright malnutrition. However, subtle deficiencies may increase the risk of a number of conditions. For example, insufficient intake of calcium and Vitamin D may increase your chances of developing osteoporosis, and inadequate folate and Vitamin B-6 may speed the development of heart disease.
Besides vitamins and minerals, intake of essential omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is often inadequate.
A strategy for everyone
Finally, note that food contains many substances other than vitamins and minerals that may enhance your health.
Supplements won’t make up for bad dietary choices. We simply must commit ourselves to eating more fruits and vegetables. Still, the reality of life is that we don’t always attend to our diet perfectly. So, appropriate nutrient supplementation can help make up for the deficiency we face because of poor nutrient density in our foods and an imperfect diet.

23. TriVita's Research Desk - New Findings in Health and Wellness
Fat around the heart may increase heart attack risk
Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Having excess fat around your heart may increase your risk of heart attack, researchers reported in the August 2008 issue of the journal Obesity. The study investigated whether a link exists between fat deposits around the heart (pericardial fat) and calcified coronary plaque in the arteries. Although calcified plaque isn't a risk factor in itself, it is associated with fatty deposits that can lead to heart attack and stroke.
Researchers studied 159 people (55 to 74 years old), measuring the amount of fat around their hearts. Those with the highest levels of fat were over four times more likely to have calcified coronary plaque. Body mass index and waist circumference were unrelated to levels of calcified coronary plaque.
"Our findings suggest that local fat deposits, rather than total body fat, are most related to calcified coronary plaque," said Jingzhong Ding, M.D., lead researcher and assistant professor of gerontology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Further research is needed to learn how to prevent buildup of fat around the heart. See page 12 of the TriVita's VitaJournal for information on how to drop excess weight.

27. TriVita Article on Loneliness and Heart Health TriVita Article on Loneliness and Heart Health
Can loneliness kill you? According to medical science, yes it can!
As humans, we need each other. Children die when they are deprived of human contact and even young adults have significantly higher blood pressure if they feel lonely. This high blood pressure can follow them into middle age where they are far more likely to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, obesity, and diabetes.
Adults cope better – especially women – but the diseases of emotional famine disable many people. Conditions that have been linked to loneliness include:
- Chronic back pain
- Ulcers
- Migraine headaches
The good news is that many of these problems subside when a person feels connected to a community. Indeed, it is only in community that you can experience life in its robust diversity.
Loneliness and the heart
Emotional turmoil causes an inflammatory reaction in the circulatory system. The blood vessels stiffen and your heart has difficulty pumping blood. Blood pressure increases and the increase damages delicate organs, such as the lungs, kidneys, eyes, and especially the blood vessels themselves. That’s why heart attacks and strokes are so common among lonely people.
Interestingly, the illnesses suffered by lonely, bored, and emotionally starved people are the same as those experienced by people under great emotional stress, such as those engaged in active combat in war. Both extremes – too much stimulation and too little – trigger the “fight or flight” mechanism. This emergency/survival mechanism interferes with the enzymes that block inflammation. Inflammation is like a heavy burden on an over-taxed system: the weakest link is sure to break!
Many people in North America have weakened their hearts with high salt/high fat foods, a sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep, and chronic stress. Loneliness adds a burden that is just too much for the human body to take – the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back – and a heart attack, stroke, or other crisis becomes inevitable. That’s the medical description for the impact of loneliness. How can we prevent this chain of events from killing us?
Women save humanity – again!
Interestingly, the amount of time spent alone does not determine the degree of loneliness. For instance, undergraduate students rated their loneliness and then reported on their social interactions and other habits throughout the school year. Those most lonely and those least lonely did not spend significantly more or less time in social contacts with others. The lonely students did, however, perceive that their social contact made demands of them that they simply could not meet.
The same report shed light on an interesting phenomenon: spending time talking with women – for both sexes – provided protection from feelings of loneliness. Many theories have been advanced to explain this but consensus from scientists appears elusive. Communication styles differ between men and women. Men seem to prefer transactional conversations while women typically exemplify negotiation, compromise, empathy, and forgiveness.
When feelings of loneliness are eliminated, high blood pressure is reduced. For instance, normal systolic blood pressure is about 120 mm/hg. Chronically lonely people typically experience an increase in blood pressure that may take them above 150 mm/hg (the “danger” zone is any systolic pressure above 140 mm/hg). Social integration yields a reduction in blood pressure of 10 to 30 mm/hg. As a comparison, achieving a weight loss of 25 pounds or more for the obese can reduce their blood pressure by 5 to 20 mm/hg and regular physical exercise reduces blood pressure by 4 to 9 mm/hg.
It is even as Robert McAfee Brown noted, “How does one keep from ‘growing old inside?’ Surely only in community.”

28. Real Stories From Real People
"The first day I took your product I felt a mental clarity I had not enjoyed in a while."
"I am a Woman's Health Nurse Practitioner who leads a very busy life. Between the mental fatigue of seeing numerous patients to planning a wedding and traveling out of state at least twice a month, I was running on empty! Even with exercising regularly, eating properly, and taking vitamin supplements every day, I was feeling worn out. I also had my thyroid examined to see if there was a physical problem.
However, after watching your infomercials for over a year, I decided to order Sublingual B-12 and give it a try. The first morning I took your product I felt a mental clarity I had not enjoyed in a while.
When I took the second dose at noon I began to feel even more energy and I felt I could go on for another eight hours. Since then (I am on the second box) I have so much energy. I have been referring my patients to your website and encouraging other staff members to try it. So, all I have to say is thank you. I would not have believed it if I had not tried it myself." – Cheryl C. Port Arth ur, TX 29. TriVita Asks What's The Connection Between Mental, Dental Health & Your Heart
Previously, we discussed the effect of loneliness on heart health. Powerful chemicals from the brain alter the way the heart functions. The heart and blood vessels respond with inflammation. Arteries harden, the efficiency of the heart muscle is reduced as the heart enlarges, and heart failure results.
Other triggers of heart disease are related to dental health. Curiously, dental health and mental health are also strongly related. How does this happen? Which comes first in this triad of triggers for heart disease?
Heart health, dental health
Coronary artery disease (CAD) usually progresses slowly over many years. The first sign of CAD is often a fatal heart attack. Because CAD is silent, it becomes imperative to practice preventive medicine such as testing for C-reactive protein (CRP), as well as blood pressure and cholesterol. However, another form of heart disease progresses quite rapidly. It is called “single-artery disease.”
Single artery disease clogs a single artery while all or most other blood vessels remain clean. It can happen when injury or infection creates inflammation in the absence of disease:
- Dental infection: One of the most common bacteria comes from a dental infection. Bacteria from inflamed gums can escape into the bloodstream and attack a single blood vessel in or near the heart.
- Inflammation: Inflammation in the gums attracts white blood cells by means of protein messengers called cytokines. Some of these messengers leak into the bloodstream and attract white blood cells. White blood cells infiltrate the infected area because of the messenger cytokines. Cytokines that leak into the bloodstream and enter the heart may send the wrong message. It may also result in white blood cells attacking an artery in the heart. This is the beginning of single artery disease: white blood cells attracted by cytokines penetrate a single artery in the heart and cause blockage.
Smoking increases the number of bacteria in the mouth and causes LDL cholesterol to become stickier. This bad habit also increases inflammation in the entire body. Bacteria, LDL and inflammation make for a lethal combination for CAD and single artery disease.
Dental health, mental health
Mental illness comes in a variety of different forms: from anxiety and bipolar disorder to depression, schizophrenia and beyond. Among the common manifestations of these disorders is lack of attention to dental care. Irregular brushing and flossing will lead to a buildup of potentially lethal bacteria. As a result, cardiovascular disease is a common companion of mental illness.
Other aspects of personal care suffer from this same inattentiveness, including diet, exercise and rest. As you know, these habits are foundations for physical and mental health. Without these essentials in place, the health spirals downward and heart failure is one of many possibilities.
Conclusion
It seems that illnesses such as CAD and heart failure are much more complex than we ever imagined. Emotional distress, dental neglect, smoking and inflammation may all combine to create vascular disease. Constant attention to the 10 Essentials of Health and Wellness and normal biological needs like dental care can help us avoid many triggers for CAD and heart failure.
Essential #4 concerns nutrients that every body needs. Essential fatty acids like those found in TriVita's OmegaPrime can help protect against inflammation. Vitamin C can also help reduce inflammation by cooling oxidative stress and TriVita Sublingual B-12, TriVita HCY Guard helps reduce inflammatory homocysteine. I especially like TriVita Adaptogen 10 Plus because it helps reduce the impact of stress while providing antioxidant protection. Nutrients and nurturing – including proper dental care – give us the best foundation for a life of meaning and purpose.

A special time for African-Americans, a great time to address health challenges
Black History Month is an annual remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African- American people. It is observed
in the United States and Canada during the month of February, and reminds us all of the many significant contributions and advances made
by African-Americans. This year's observance of Black History Month has a special resonance because the United States' first African-
American president, Barack Obama, was inaugurated in January.
In addition to honoring achievements, Black History Month is also an apt time to look at some of the healthcare challenges that face African-Americans specifically. With awareness and preventive measures, these challenges can be better faced in the years to come. Happily, the rates for heart disease, breast cancer, infant mortality and teenage pregnancy are down for this group. However, African-Americans are still more likely to develop cancer than other racial or ethnic groups and AIDS and kidney disease remain major killers.
It's true for African-Americans and for all people: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Seeing your healthcare provider regularly and getting proper screenings reduce the health risks for people of all ethnic backgrounds.
At risk for several illnesses
Several diseases and health issues continue to challenge African-Americans specifically:
- African-Americans have a 50% higher prevalence of hypertension (high blood pressure) than the overall population.
- The diabetes-related death rate has increased for the total population and even more so, for African-Americans.
- African-Americans develop kidney failure about four times more frequently than Caucasians. Both high blood pressure and diabetes are the major culprits.
- The elderly African-American population still lags behind the total elderly population in immunization rates.
- The rate of coronary artery disease among African-Americans has decreased in recent years. However, because this group has higher blood pressure than other ethnic groups, the risk of coronary heart disease remains higher.
Here's how you can take control of your healthcare destiny – regardless of your ethnic background:
- Make sure your healthcare provider discusses your health with you and that you form a partnership to maintain your good health.
- Looking for a healthcare provider? Studies show that healthcare providers with racial and ethnic background similar to their patients are more likely to have a partnering relationship with their patients.
- Don't be passive. If you don't understand or agree with your healthcare provider's recommendations, then don't be afraid to ask questions.
- Follow the 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness – found on page 2 of the VitaJournal. These rules for building health allow every one of us to take advantage of our genetic strengths.
We all require the same things for health and happiness, no matter where our ancestors came from. The "10 Essentials" are universal. These
cherished guidelines apply to men and women everywhere in the world, regardless of their ethnic origin.

Quick: What's your blood pressure (BP)? If you have no idea, you might also be in the dark about some serious effects of unmanaged high blood pressure (HBP), also called hypertension. Grave conditions like heart disease, heart failure, stroke and kidney failure can be caused by HBP, so it's important to know where you stand.
Just what is blood pressure? It's the force of blood pushing against our artery walls as our heart pumps out blood. If this pressure is too high for too long, it can damage our arteries, over-work our heart and damage other major organs. What's worse: HBP usually has no symptoms, so you might be unaware of the damage it's doing.
Get to know your numbers
When a blood pressure measurement is taken, two things are measured: systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. This is then expressed as a
number, such as 120/70 (120 over 70). The first number, systolic, is the pressure when the heart is pumping blood; the second number, diastolic, is the pressure when the heart rests between beats.
This table from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute shows normal numbers for adults (18 and over), and which numbers put you at greater risk for health problems.
Categories for blood pressure levels in adults

Or |

Or |
100 or higher |
Note: If you have diabetes or chronic kidney disease, HBP is defined as 130/80 or higher. HBP numbers also differ for children and teens.
Age does make a difference: blood pressure tends to rise as we get older, making it even more important to keep it under control. If you're a male older than 45 or a female older than 55, your risk for HBP is higher. About one-third of U.S. adults have HBP.
"White coat hypertension": truth or myth?
There is a real health syndrome called "white coat hypertension" that has to do with medical checkups. Some people's blood pressure readings are high only when they visit their healthcare provider's office because they're nervous or anxious. In these cases, the person might be asked to monitor their blood pressure at home, or to wear a device for a short time that takes blood pressure every 30 minutes. If you're familiar enough with your numbers to know that your first reading is high (you may have to ask), request another reading at the end of your visit.
Taking the pressure off
If you have HBP, your healthcare provider may recommend lifestyle changes to help keep it under control, including:
- Following a healthy eating plan
- Getting enough physical activity
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Quitting smoking
- Managing and learning to cope with stress
As research continues into HBP, science is also discovering some "tasty" ways to help take the pressure off, including these fascinating findings:
- Steering clear of table salt? Don't pass on the potassium or magnesium at the same time. A recent review in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension found that the numbers go down when we boost our intake of fruits and vegetables like squash, bananas, dates and spinach.
- Chocolate-lovers, rejoice: Yale University researchers have found more evidence that antioxidants in dark chocolate can help lower BP.
If you don't know your blood pressure, February's Heart Health Month is the perfect time to give your heart a "valentine": find out and, if needed, take action.
Source: TriVita VitaJournal February 2009 pg 14. 32. Keep an Eye on Your Vision Watch for the signs of these life-changing conditions
This month is AMD/Low Vision Awareness Month, a good time to keep an eye on your eye health. Certainly, loss of vision can be one of the most debilitating conditions you face. By taking care of your eyes and recognizing the symptoms of certain eye conditions, you can help preserve the precious gift of sight.
Age-related macular degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 60, according to the National Eye Institute. It may come on quickly, but typically, it progresses slowly.
AMD affects the macula (located in the retina), which allows you to see sharp detail. There are two forms of AMD: dry and wet.
- Dry AMD – cells in the macula break down, blurring vision.
- Wet AMD – abnormal blood vessels grow under the macula and leak blood and other fluids, which move the macula from its normal place.
Damage occurs quickly; wet AMD is also called advanced AMD.
Signs of AMD
Dry AMD starts with blurred vision and can eventually progress to a blind spot in the center of the field of vision. The most common symptom of wet AMD is straight lines appearing wavy. Those with wet AMD may also experience a small blind spot.
Low vision
Do you have a hard time doing everyday tasks – even with glasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery? The problem may be what the
National Eye Institute describes as "low vision."
Low vision can be caused by birth defects or injury, or result from eye disorders and conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetes.
Signs of low vision
If you or someone you know experiences any of the following, it could be a sign of low vision:
- Trouble reading street signs
- Trouble doing things at home or work because the lights seem dimmer
- Trouble recognizing the faces of friends and family
- Trouble with close work such as reading, sewing or picking out matching clothes
If any of the symptoms of AMD or low vision occur, it's time to make an appointment with an eye care professional. Encourage friends and
family with these symptoms to do the same. It's important that these eye conditions be identified early; it can mean the difference between successful treatment and lost vision.
Protect your eye health now
Even if you don't have these conditions, you can never be too careful when it comes to vision health; don't wait for blurry or impaired vision before taking steps to protect your eyesight.
- Get your eyes checked. The American Optometric Association recommends eye exams according to the following schedule:
- 18-60 years: every 2 years
- 61+ years: every year
- Those who wear glasses or contacts: every year
- Good eats for good eyes. Studies have shown that nutrients found in colorful fruits and vegetables may help reduce your risk of eye problems.
- Supplement with eye-protective nutrients. TriVita's VisionGuard was formulated with important nutrients that have been shown to nourish the eyes and help keep eyesight strong.
Source: TriVita VitaJournal February 2009 pg 15.33. Eat Your Way To a Healthier Heart - A TriVita Article Eat Your Way To a Healthier Heart
By Christa Orecchio, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Holistic Health Counselor
Nothing matters more than taking good care of your heart. We can keep ourselves in shape by getting regular exercise, not smoking and controlling stress. Just as important: eating a variety of nutritious, heart-healthy foods that make up a healthy diet.
Where to start? Increase these "super foods" to eat your way to a healthier heart.
Blueberries: They top the list as one of the most powerful disease-fighting foods. That's because they contain anthocyanins, the antioxidant responsible for their dark blue color. These delicious jewels are packed with fiber, Vitamin C and heart-healthy potassium.
Regularly add them into your diet in yogurt, trail mix, salads, cereal, in your favorite Leanology® shake or just by themselves.
Salmon: This cold-water fish is a great source of protein and is also packed with heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. The American Heart Association advises eating salmon and other Omega-3 rich foods twice a week for benefits that go beyond heart health. Make sure
your salmon is wild caught to avoid toxic heavy metals and lack of nutrients that can be found in farm-raised salmon.
Recipe Idea: Marinate salmon in a lime, onion, garlic and soy sauce mixture for 15 minutes before grilling for a delicious fish taco or grilled fish sandwich.
oatmeal: Oats are nourishing whole grains and a great source of vitamins, minerals and cholesterol-lowering fiber. Research
shows that oats lower cholesterol levels, keep you regular and may help protect against certain cancers.
Recipe Ideas: Add oats whenever you bake. Substitute oat flour for white or wheat flour in pancakes, muffins, quick breads, cookies and coffee cakes for an added dose of fiber. Or try oats in place of bread crumbs in dishes such as meatloaf, meatballs or breading on poultry.
Kale: Even mightier than spinach, kale is the powerhouse of the vegetable kingdom. Its rich, dark color comes from the multiple
phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals (especially folate and iron) it contains that fight disease, protect the heart and preserve your eyesight. To top it off, kale is also the "king of calcium" – it delivers the highest absorbable form of calcium possible.
Recipe Idea: Mix kale with pine nuts and raisins, then stuff into winter squash and bake for a colorful, delicious main or side dish. Even easier – saute with garlic and olive oil.
Flaxseed: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, phytoestrogens and fiber, this powerful seed is most effective when it is ground up and stored away from light, heat and air. Studies suggest that flaxseed lowers the risk of blood clots, stroke and irregular heartbeat. It may also help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.
Menu Idea: Ground flaxseed works easily in all sorts of foods – on top of salads or soup, in yogurt parfaits, smoothies or morning cereal.
almonds and walnuts: These nuts are high in plant Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, magnesium, folate, fiber, heart-favorable monoand
polyunsaturated fats and phytosterols.
Menu Idea: Mix a few almonds (and berries) into low-fat yogurt, trail mix or fruit salads, and add walnuts to salads, pastas, cookies, muffins and even pancakes for a flavorful crunch.
Brown rice: Contains high levels of B-complex vitamins and magnesium, which nourish our central nervous system. Vitamin B-12 (folate) and Vitamin B-6 protect against blood clots and atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Niacin (Vitamin B-3) helps increase HDL (good) cholesterol.
What about when eating out?
Many restaurants do not yet offer things like kale, flaxseed or brown rice. However, there are many choices you can make to support your heart and your health. When dining out, ask that your food be steamed, poached or baked instead of sauteed or fried. Ask for a side of olive oil and lemon to dress it yourself with the "good" fat. When eating salads, request your dressing on the side and choose oil and vinegar whenever possible. Get an extra serving of veggies (broccoli, carrots, spinach) and forego the white rice or potato. Choose
lighter sauces vs. cream-based sauces. Also, it's important to think outside the box. If there is nothing on the menu that speaks to you, make up your own meal from the appetizers and sides that are offered.
By choosing heart-healthy foods, the "bad" fats naturally find their way out of our diet and life. Steer clear of margarine or anything labeled trans-fats or fractionated palm kernel oil. Moderate other high cholesterol foods like butter, cheese, ice cream, red meat and other highly dense animal foods. With only a few simple changes, you will be well on your way to lowering your cholesterol, having more energy and taking care of that amazing heart that beats for you, every second of every single day.

The first time he did it was to set a baseline for my cognitive abilities. Every time after that is to make sure my ability is not diminishing or at least not diminishing at an abnormal rate. The few times I have taken it I did well; I lost my focus a couple times and got about three or four things wrong. Over the past couple months I have been taking TriVita Super Sublingual B-12. I went to my neurologist yesterday and he had me take the cognitive test again. This time, I had a PERFECT score; I never lost my focus. The woman who administered the test was amazed and very impressed; they don't normally see a perfect score and especially with someone with my condition."

35. Preventive Measures That Can Improve Your Heart Health Preventive Measures That Can Improve Your Heart Health
by Dr. Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
Around 700,000 people in North America die from heart attacks each year. The most common cause of heart attacks is a blood clot caused by coronary artery disease (CAD). Yet, as bad as CAD is, heart attacks from narrow arteries and blood clots are not the only conditions that cause heart disease. Many heart diseases exist and are preventable with just a little care.
Common conditions
High blood pressure
The most common cause of heart disease in North America is high blood pressure; it affects 73 million people in the U.S. alone. High blood pressure may be caused by:
- Disease in the blood vessels that cause them to narrow
- Imbalances in the kidneys, lungs and liver
- Cardiomyopathy – a disease of the heart muscle
How to help: Keys to reducing high blood pressure are found in the 10 Essentials. Some people can reduce their high blood pressure simply by practicing deep breathing. Other techniques include increasing fruits and vegetables, and increasing fiber and water while reducing sodium.
Coronary artery disease
Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when plaque builds up inside a blood vessel of the heart. CAD affects over 16 million people in the U.S. It leads to angina pectoris – pain caused by poor blood flow to the heart muscles – and is associated with heart attack.
How to help: Coronary artery disease responds well to a low-fat, high-fiber diet of mainly fruits and vegetables. Stress reduction and daily exercise are also effective therapies in combating CAD. Almost all heart specialists recommend Omega-3 oils such as those in OmegaPrime as effective tools in combating CAD.
Congestive heart failure
Congestive heart failure (CHF) and related forms of heart failure may affect over five million people in North America. It is strongly related to diabetes and obesity. Among the most common triggers in CHF is obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea builds up blood pressure in an attempt to get oxygen to critical tissues such as the heart and brain.
How to help: Most people with CHF respond to treatment for sleep apnea, treatment with CoEnzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10), and the other suggestions already mentioned.
Common remedies
Body weight and blood sugar control
Achieving and maintaining optimum body weight and blood sugar control are two suggestions that always top the list of remedies for all forms of heart disease. The Leanology program can help you meet those objectives. Leanology is much more than a "diet plan" – it helps you make the necessary lifestyle adjustments through nutrition and activity to help you reach and maintain a healthier weight.
Nutrients
- OmegaPrime can help reduce the "stickiness" of blood to protect against clots and may slow down the process of plaque formation. One or two grams are enough to help protect against heart disease, but much more is needed if the heart is already diseased.
- CoQ-10 offers significant benefits to the heart. It should be taken at bedtime to reduce the impact of sleep apnea on the heart and brain.
- Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and resveratrol (found in Super Antioxidant Complex) are also best taken at night, then again in the morning.
- Special proteins found in garlic and other antioxidants such as bilberry (found in VisionGuard) can help improve lipids such as cholesterol while opening the tiniest blood vessels in the legs, hands, eyes, ears and brain.
In the end, many of the problems with heart disease can be protected against or even solved with the tools we have readily at hand (always follow the advice of your healthcare provider for your personal condition). What about the impact of emotions on heart health? Can the 10 Essentials assist us here as well? Next week our Wellness Report will address the connection between mental/dental health and your heart.

by Michael R. Ellison, CEO & Founder of TriVita, Inc.
February is Heart Health Month. Because of the significant rise in heart disease, Congress passed a resolution on December 30, 1963 that each year the President would declare February our National Heart Health Awareness Month.
Heart disease is still the number one killer in 2009. With 64 million Americans, plus millions more in Canada being affected by cardiovascular disease, we want to inspire you to take action to create a lifestyle that will give you a healthy heart. Your heart health is also crucial to your overall health and well-being.
While your heart is a small organ about the size of your fist, it has major responsibilities. Every 60 seconds it must pump two gallons of blood through an entire cycle: from the heart, through the arteries, veins and capillaries, and back to the heart. Every cell in your body relies on the blood to carry oxygen and the nutrients your body needs to function properly as well as resist disease.
With us being so dependent on our heart functioning properly, isn't it wonderful that the decisions we make can determine if we have a healthy heart. Some people act as if their heart is a machine that either works or doesn't work – and there is nothing they can do about its health. Well, there is good news for all of you who care about your heart and want better health.
The American Heart Association and the world-renowned Mayo Clinic have much to say about improving heart health by choosing a lifestyle that promotes heart health. Basically, it comes down to three things you can do:
- Think smart
- Eat well
- Move more
That provides a simple guideline to the daily decisions we must make.
I would like to add that thinking smart is being aware of what we are thinking; many people do not realize the thoughts and feelings they dwell on are also a part of their daily diet for heart health. Every thought and emotion triggers a chemical reaction that is either good or bad for the heart. For example, when you have an angry thought or a fearful, anxious thought, your body releases significant adrenaline
to help stimulate the muscles and mind for the fight or flight response needed.
That was great for our ancient ancestors when faced with a saber-toothed tiger, but where I live in Scottsdale, Arizona that is not likely to happen. However, there are plenty of opportunities for adrenaline rushes from rude drivers, snarled traffic, construction delays, or the fear of a poor economy that seems to be impacting many people. Thoughts and feelings from all kinds of issues we face create chemicals that are not healthy for the heart when they bombard us on a daily basis.
I would encourage you to read the article by Dr. Lundell on pages 4 and 5 [ of this issue of the TriVita VitaJournal]. Here is a viewpoint of one of the most outstanding heart surgeons who spent much of his career performing thousands of heart surgeries and consulting with his patients about heart health. We are pleased to bring this information to you as it gives another view as to what really will bring healthy hearts to those of us in the U.S. and Canada.
I am very excited about the development and introduction of our new product line Sonoran Bloom™, which we have been working on for the last two years. In fact, I am so enthusiastic about the wellness benefits of these products, that we are going to 30 cities in a pre-launch campaign to introduce the product to our Members. We will be giving a 32-ounce bottle of the delicious Opuntia liquid concentrate FREE to each person who attends. We want to hear about the amazing results our Members will experience from the product. This product has helped people with arthritis, joint and back pain, foot pain, muscle soreness, and overall aches and pains that are caused
by inflammation.
This product addresses the hottest issue in medical research today: inflammation. Inflammation is being linked to many diseases. It weakens the body and enables disease to set in. You will learn a lot about what you can do to reduce and monitor inflammation. Our mission is to inspire people to experience wellness and create wealth for their life purposes! Helping people live a vibrant and healthy life is why TriVita was founded. Let us help you!
There will also be a brief introduction of the income opportunity for Affiliates who want to share information with those they know and care about. TriVita is proud of the way we do business with our customers in that we provide opportunities based on the desires of each Member: opportunities to simply purchase products for their own wellness as well as the chance to be involved with the sharing opportunity. It is simple and rewarding to help someone enjoy and experience greater wellness with TriVita products.
If you want to know more about this product in our prelaunch campaign and our mission of helping people experience wellness, please plan to join us in a city near you. On page 30, you will find a listing of some of the cities we will be visiting.
Make 2009 your year of experiencing greater wellness and take someone with you on your wellness journey!

Dr. Libby brought his depth of knowledge to TriVita's early TV programming.
Dr. Libby's legacy of pioneering continues by Dr. Scott Conard
"To 'B' or not to 'B'" – that was the title of an address I gave at a wellness conference in Scottsdale, Arizona recently. I was speaking, of course, about Vitamin B-12, and the event gave me the chance to review its growth from an undervalued vitamin to a recognized powerhouse in health. It also gave me the chance to recall my early involvement with TriVita® and respect for the work of Alfred Libby, M.D., the inventor of TriVita Sublingual B-12, B-6 and Folic Acid.
As you may know, Dr. Libby was a pioneer in nutrients and health, and an associate of Linus Pauling, Ph.D., the two-time Nobel Laureate and "Father of Vitamin C." Early in his career, Dr. Libby discovered the dramatic health changes that B-12 could make, and worked for decades to raise awareness.
"We've given people back their lives"
Along with B-12, Dr. Libby was the "star" of the original TriVita TV infomercials beginning in 2000. It is still his original, patented formula (contained in over 11 million boxes of Sublingual B-12 sold) that has helped so many. Here, I've selected some of his memorable thoughts:
"We've given people back their lives," Dr. Libby said. At the time, painful and expensive injections were the only way to supplement effectively with B-12. And, undiagnosed B-12 deficiency caused untold damage.
"B-12 deficiency, undiagnosed and untreated, wreaks havoc," he declared. This "havoc" took many forms:
• Moodiness
• Low energy
• A heart-damaging buildup of homocysteine
• High cholesterol
He would talk about patients who, with Sublingual B-12, went from moodiness and lethargy to enthusiasm and energy... older people, sent to nursing homes because they were disruptive and difficult, becoming "functional human beings again"... heart patients having their blood pressure and cholesterol levels stabilized.
A key element in Dr. Libby's Sublingual B-12 is its unique delivery system: "sublingual" means under the tongue, where the tablets dissolve and get quickly into the bloodstream. This is crucial to maximum absorption and maximum benefit.
Dramatic effects, and a change of career
In my own medical practice, I found the same kinds of patient results that Dr. Libby witnessed years before. In fact, that's how I came to be associated with TriVita and Sublingual B-12. For years, my medical practice specialized in treating the elderly. Patients would come into my office complaining that they had no energy, felt "low" and depressed and they would beg for B-12 "shots." After their shots they became so much more alive, so much more well, that I changed course in my career.
I founded TienaHealth to focus on preventive medicine, convinced that the way to make a difference in people's lives was to help them get the vitamins and nutrients they need before health issues arise. After the world lost Dr. Libby in 2002, I began speaking up about Sublingual B-12 for TriVita, and am proud to continue today.
My own experience has shown me the truth of Dr. Libby's statement: "It's so fulfilling, so gratifying to be involved with this (Sublingual
B-12)... and with the right company, TriVita."
On his original infomercial, Dr. Libby would gesture toward the phone banks and say, "When I see the phones light up it reminds me of the song, 'You Light Up My Life.' That's how I feel when I see those lights; people's lives are lighting up."
Having seen so many lives "light up" with Sublingual B-12, I can only say I wholeheartedly agree.

39. Lose Weight, Lighten Up... To Help Your Heart! Lose Weight, Lighten Up... To Help Your Heart!
dropping excess fat is an important first step to reducing your heart disease risk
As you probably know, a big risk for heart disease is excessive weight. Not only does it increase the strain on the heart but it also contributes to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. A high-fat diet combined with little or no exercise is a major factor in rising cholesterol levels and heart disease.
In the United States, approximately one-third of the adult population weighs 20% or more over their ideal weight.
Can losing weight lower your cholesterol levels?
Being overweight has been shown to increase total cholesterol levels. It can also cause your cholesterol levels to get out of balance, raising levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol that clogs blood vessels and lowering levels of HDL (good) cholesterol by raising blood pressure and straining the heart.
Do you weigh more than you should?
Most of us have done the simple “mirror test” – we simply look in the mirror and see if we are overweight. If you can pinch an inch at your waist, chances are you need to lose weight. Also, if you weigh 10 to 15 pounds more than you did when you were 20, you may need to drop some weight with the help of the Leanology® Weight Loss System and lifestyle changes.
What is your ideal weight?
Your ideal weight is determined by lean body mass (everything but fat) plus the amount of fat you need for good health. This ranges from 10%-18% of total body weight for men and 18%-25% of total body weight for women. A health professional can estimate your own percentage by
measuring your body fat with a skinfold caliper.
How body shape impacts heart health
Recent research suggests that heart health can be affected as much by body shape as by weight. For example, people whose waists are nearly as large as or larger than their hips have a higher rate of heart disease.
To determine your waist-to-hip ratio, measure your waist just above the navel. Measure your hips at their widest. Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A waist-to-hip ratio greater than 0.8 for women and 0.95 for men indicates higher heart disease risk.
The different kinds of body fat – and their importance
Some of us carry excess weight in the hips and thighs while others carry it in the abdominal area. Several studies have indicated that excess fat in the abdominal area is more likely to cause health problems such as high cholesterol levels.
Since the measurement around your waistline reflects your level of abdominal fat, a waist measurement can provide a good clue to whether
you have too much upper body fat. You may have too much abdominal fat if your waist measurement exceeds:
• 40 inches for men • 35 inches for women
Fat around the heart may increase heart attack risk
A recent study from Wake Forest University indicates that having excess fat around the heart may also be a health risk. Even a thin person can have fat around the heart. Pericardial fat, or stores of fat around the heart, is known to cause higher secretion of inflammatory
substances, which may accelerate the development of heart disease.
Weight control tips
- Eat more high-fiber foods, including fruits and grains.
- Use non-fat or low-fat dairy products.
- Eat only lean meats, fish, skinless poultry and low-fat vegetable proteins such as tofu.
- Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Keep serving sizes moderate and avoid second helpings.
- Get regular physical activity. Even a brisk walk is great exercise.
- Limit sugary desserts and soft drinks.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Celebrate your successes with non-food treats, such as a weekend getaway, a massage or a new look or hairstyle.
Since February is Heart Health Month, there’s never been a better time to get your weight and your health under control.

41. Protect Yourself From Stress, The Silent Killer Stress is an engineering term. It describes the forces that try to tear a structure apart such as weight, wind, temperature and pressure. In humans it is much the same: Certain pressures try to tear us apart. Sometimes these stresses come from inside of us; sometimes the pressures tearing us apart come from the outside.
Homeostasis is a gift that humans and other living creatures possess but bridges and buildings do not have. Homeostasis is the force that moves resources from our reserves to wherever they are needed to combat stress.
Where stress begins
Stress is caused by change – any change. Change requires us to rearrange our priorities to meet new circumstances. Stress can also be the same circumstance over time because time itself is change.
An easy way to conceptualize stress is to say it comes from inside of us and outside of us. Some examples:
Stress from inside
- Hunger
- Aging
- Time pressure
Stress from outside
- Air pollution
- Water pollution
- Noise pollution
Stress is the accumulation of all the things that pull us apart.
Homeostasis
The antidote to change is homeostasis. The Greek word "stasis" means to stand still or to stand equally. It describes a point where the tug-of-war balances out and motion ceases. Homeostasis is the ability of living organisms to adjust their internal environments to create balance. Of course, people can adjust their external environments as well (at least to some extent).
Just imagine all of the stresses pulling you apart every day: gravity, temperature, emotional upsets and expectations, etc. What balances that tug-of-war? The 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness!
Nutrients and nurturing
A body and mind deprived of proper nutrients and nurturing will be more prone to disease. "Disease" is the joining of two words. "Ease" is the freedom from difficulty, hardship or effort. "Dis-ease" is the opposite of ease: the things that make life more difficult and hard. It is also the abnormal functioning of the body or mind when the balancing forces of homeostasis fail to meet the demands of change.
The 10 Essentials create a reservoir of energy to combat the destructive forces of stress. For example, the simple act of breathing deeply can reduce the level of toxicity in our body and therefore reduce the state of imbalance.

TriVita's OmegaPrime Contains Essential Fatty Acids for Vibrant Good Health
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) support the body's health in two ways:
1. Fighting Inflammation
- Help reduce cardiovascular inflammation - to lower the risks of heart disease, heart attack and stroke.
- Lessen joint inflammation - to ease joint pain and inflammation for increased flexibility
- Relieve respiratory inflammation - to lessen any inflammation related to allergies and asthma.
2. Development Growth and Healthy Aging
- Help the brain - EFAs nourish the brain, support its development and protect against deterioration - all of which help boost brain function for improved memory, concentration and focus.
- Protect circulation - EFAs help raise levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and lower levels of triglycerides and unhealthy LDL (bad cholesterol)- which help lead to a healthy heart and circulatory system.
- Support hormone production - EFAs are a key building block for the production of the body's healthy hormones - which assist with all body processes and help support an overall sense of both physical and mental balance and well-being.
Why TriVita OmegaPrime is so significant to our health
The human body has a daily need for EFAs. They play a key role in helping to sustain vibrant good health in adults of all ages. EFAs nourish the body's:
- Heart
- Brain
- Skin
- Glands
- Joints
EFAs are also critical to the hormone production process. And, since the body cannot produce EFAs on its own, outside sources like food and supplements containing EFAs are necessary.
TriVita OmegaPrime's EFAs support our wellness in so many ways, starting with helping to reduce runaway inflammation. Many of us don't realize this, but runaway inflammation can lead to serious health problems in the body involving the heart, arteries, lungs, joints and more.
The EFAs in OmegaPrime® are critical for all adults in every stage of life - from development and growth to healthy aging
When it comes to our health and our pressing need for EFAs, it's important to choose the right product. Choosing TriVita OmegaPrime means you'll get the best. Its name says it all - Omega and Prime stand for:

The term irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is used when chronic colon problems occur and a medical cause cannot be determined. Common symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, alternating diarrhea and constipation, excess intestinal gas, intestinal cramping, uncomfortable bowel movements, mucous discharge from the rectum, abdominal discomfort following meals, and excessive awareness of the presence of stool in the colon. Despite all these distressing symptoms, in IBS the intestines appear to be perfectly healthy when they are examined. This condition means that while the function of the bowel seems to have gone awry, no injury or disturbance of its structure can be found. (A similar problem in the stomach is called dyspepsia, and the two conditions frequently overlap.)
Because the cause of IBS is not understood, conventional medical treatment of IBS is highly inadequate. Other medical treatment approaches for IBS include increased dietary fiber, drugs that reduce bowel spasm, and drugs to treat constipation or diarrhea as needed. In addition, various forms of psychotherapy, including hypnosis, have been tried, with some success.
A number of alternative medicine treatments have shown some promise for IBS. The most well known of these is peppermint oil, thought to reduce bowel spasm. Another approach involves probiotics. The most famous probiotic is Lactobacillus acidophilus, used in making yogurt. There are many other probiotics as well. When these health-promoting bacteria take up residence in the digestive tract, they compete with other microorganisms, thereby improving intestinal health.
Based on this, probiotics might be helpful for people with IBS. Numerous studies have indeed shown promise, but all of these were small, and therefore subject to question. In 2007, however, a substantial study was published in France that lends strong credence to the use of probiotics for this condition.
This double-blind placebo-controlled trial involved 274 people with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. (As the name suggests, this is IBS in which constipation is a more significant symptom than diarrhea). Participants were given either placebo or a probiotic formula containing Bifidobacterium animalis. The results over the six-week study period showed that use of the probiotic led to a significant reduction in colon discomfort compared to placebo. In addition, the probiotic treatment significantly increased stool frequency.

The exact cause of dyspepsia is not known. Most commonly, however, the condition is attributed to a number of unhealthy lifestyle factors that can result in poor digestion most commonly affecting the esophagus and stomach.
Risk Factors
The following lifestyle factors increase your chances of experiencing dyspepsia:
- Overeating
- Eating too quickly or at irregular intervals
- Eating greasy, high-fat, or spicy foods
- Drinking caffeine, alcohol, or soda pop in excess
- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen
- Smoking
- Psychological stress
If the discomfort persists despite addressing these factors, your healthcare provider may order tests to determine if the symptoms are related to a more serious condition, such as gastritis or a peptic ulcer. In many cases, your healthcare provider may recommend treating your symptoms with medications first and following up with tests if this proves ineffective.
Treatment
Your healthcare provider will suggest a treatment plan based on the severity of your symptoms. Treatment options may include the following:

TriVita VitaJournal January 2005 pg 13 47. TriVita Story - Success By Surprise
Cody and Marty Ramsey found an income and lifestyle through TriVita that even they did not expect.
WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS, you could say that Cody Ramsey soars above the competition. As an aircraft dealer, he earns an excellent income and enjoys the extensive travel that his job requires. With his wife, Marty, Cody began looking for retirement investments and opportunities to complement his healthy income. “We were considering ideas such as investing in an apartment building or other types of real estate, but realized that going into business with TriVita made a lot more sense,” Cody says. “It provided businesslike income without all the headaches and debt.”
Marty is the one credited with finding TriVita five years ago. As a critical care nurse, she was intrigued when she saw a Nobel Prize winning doctor speaking about a B-12 supplement on an infomercial. Encouraged by his wife, Cody called TriVita that afternoon, and while ordering the vitamins discovered that the TriVita home office is based in Scottsdale— the city he was traveling to the next morning. “When I realized how close their office was to the Scottsdale airport, I decided to pick up the vitamins personally,” Cody says. “While I was there, I took a tour of their home office and found it very interesting.” At the end of the tour, Cody was told that he could partner with TriVita through some of their media opportunities.
“I was intrigued that a corporation offered to profit share with me,” Cody says. Originally, Cody wasn’t completely sold on the TriVita business opportunity. “I took it for a test drive because I didn’t believe it,” he says. “Here’s a company that does millions of dollars in sales, and they’re going to allow you to share? I just flat didn’t believe it.” Full of skepticism, Cody acquired a few customers from TriVita and admittedly forgot about the business for a few years. “After a while I looked at this business and realized it had succeeded,” Cody says. “In fact, it did better than they told me it would.”
As TriVita continued to prove profitable, Cody began to understand how it could be applied to his already successful business. “Before TriVita, I would always have to be in debt at some point in the year to maintain my overhead,” Cody says. “Now TriVita not only helps me stay out of debt, but it rivals my aircraft income.” His extra income from TriVita began to extend into other parts of his life. “I wanted to earn enough money to replace Marty’s paycheck so she wouldn’t have to work,” he says. “Within 90 days we surpassed that goal, and it continues to increase.”

Planning is the name of the game
Planning to retire soon, or a distant someday? If you're discouraged about the prospects of retiring, you're not alone: Only 18% of workers are very confident about retirement, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
With all the economic gloom-and-doom you hear these days, no wonder so many people feel uneasy. Your best bet? Make sure you have a
solid retirement plan – starting today.
calculate your retirement savings
The first step is to calculate your retirement savings. Ask yourself these questions:
- How much do I have?
- How much will I need to live comfortably? (Be sure to include healthcare costs)
- How much time do I have to create a nice nest egg?
- Where will the money come from?
- Social Security (go to ssa.gov for an online benefits calculator)
- Pension(s)
- Investments
The Employee Benefit Research Institute survey found that when people calculated their retirement savings, it had a strong effect on their behavior: 44% changed their retirement planning strategy and 59% started saving and/or investing more.
work longer
Many people of retirement age are finding that they must work longer than they had originally expected. Sometimes working a few extra years can make a huge difference when it comes to retirement funds. If you have to continue working, there are some steps you can take to maximize your money:
- Contribute the maximum amount to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)
- Contribute the maximum amount to your employer-retirement plan (if you're no longer working, you can roll over your 401(k) to an IRA)
- Try to keep at least three months' expenses in a savings or similar account.
More ... 49. TriVita - What Causes Bad Breath? by Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
One of the most common complaints among people today is poor digestion. This becomes even more distressing when personal issues like poor digestion develop into social issues like bad breath. The signs and symptoms of digestive imbalance are important as we learn to listen to our body.
Learning to listen
Imagine you had to write a book describing in detail how the ecology of our earth functions – how the rain cycle works, photosynthesis, biodiversity, seasons, and so on. Now imagine you could use only 100 words. Would that be a challenge? Absolutely!
Your body has only a few words in its vocabulary. See how many you can name:
- Fatigue
- Pain – sharp or dull
- Bleeding
- Constipation or diarrhea
You get the picture. Your body must communicate an infinitely complex system with just a few "words" in the form of symptoms. So, we need to listen carefully when our body speaks to us.
The heartbreak of halitosis
Digestion begins when we feel the sense of hunger and anticipate satisfying our needs with certain foods we crave. When we see and smell those foods our anticipation is heightened and we begin to secrete digestive juices in preparation for eating. Our mouth may water; this is because digestion begins in our mouth when we chew food and mix it with saliva.
It is important to thoroughly chew our food in order to neutralize the carbohydrates found in absolutely everything we eat. One reason why some people have bad breath (halitosis) is because they just don’t chew their food well enough to neutralize the carbs. It may also be the sign of a more serious health condition.
Slow down when you eat. You will enjoy your meal more, have sweeter breath and digest your food better.
More ... 50. It Is Decision Time A different way to analyze risk – and find purpose
For most of us, making a decision boils down to just two questions: What do I stand to gain? What do I stand to lose?
If you think back on the last few decisions you made, you'll probably realize that those are just the issues you considered.
Should I take a vacation to see family?
(I'd be with loved ones, but I'm not sure I can afford it right now.)
Is it time to start a new exercise routine?
(I'll be healthier, but I might fall and hurt myself.)
Do I want to devote more time to that business venture?
(The potential is great, but I might waste time that could have gone into something else.)
This "risk-and-reward" thinking is a classic model of human psychology, and one that's been at the center of our survival. Research continues into how our brains are "wired" to assess risk. In fact, just this fall researchers identified the brain regions involved in risk-taking. They found two separate centers for the "fear of risk and the lure of reward," said the co-author, a professor of psychology at the University of Southern California. The study appeared online in the journal Cerebral Cortex.
Now, though, there's a new model for the way we make decisions based on risk and reward. It's proposed by a celebrated brain surgeon and head of a prestigious medical center – and people are paying attention.
Four smart questions to ask yourself first!
Ben Carson, M.D., has already published three best-selling books, and his latest is a call to action: "Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose, and Live with Acceptable Risk."
Drawing on his own life choices, and miraculous experiences with "risky" surgeries, Dr. Carson has produced a different way to think about risk. He calls it "Best/Worst Analysis (B/WA) formula," and it's expressed in these four simple questions:

"Eight years ago my husband and I were in a bad car accident. A year into the healing process I saw the Sublingual B-12 on TV and decided to try it. I thought, 'I have nothing to lose. I can send it back if it doesn't work!' So I started taking the B-12 and within a couple of days I noticed a difference. After a while I added the Vital C Crystals. I had a pain in my shoulder for a long time. One day, after taking the C for awhile, I realized that the pain was gone. If I stopped taking the C, I noticed that I wasn't feeling as well.
Now I'm on the Healthy Aging Pack, which includes both of those products, plus the VitaDaily AM/PM and OmegaPrime. I started taking it because it's hard to know what you should take, but the Pack was introduced and it had everything I needed. I keep taking it because I feel much better when I'm on it. I sleep well at night. I have minimal aches and pains. I have steady energy throughout the day. Plus it's convenient and there's a slight cost savings. I love TriVita!" – Kathy G. Jenks, OK
Source: TriVita VitaJournal January 2009 pg 26. 52. Why Vitamin D stands for "illness-fighter"
By Dr. Tammy Pon
Practically every day another benefit of Vitamin D is revealed. Vitamin D is created when our skin is exposed to sunshine. It is also present in our diet, mainly in cold-water fish and dark green vegetables.
A recent newspaper headline read, "Vitamin D Linked to Parkinson's disease." At first glance, it may not be clear if Vitamin D is a culprit or an "illness-fighter." Well, in fact, just as Vitamin D helps build bones, Vitamin D plays a role in building our brains – it is an "illness-fighter."
Vitamin D and Parkinson's
Previous studies have shown that the part of the brain affected most by Parkinson's, the substantia nigra, has high levels of the Vitamin
D receptor, which suggests Vitamin D may be important for normal functions of these cells.
If we look at other Vitamin D research, low levels of Vitamin D have been found to be associated with:
• Many neurological diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's
• Autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis
• Metabolic disorders such as diabetes.
Vitamin D is formed when sunlight strikes the skin and interacts with cholesterol. Its main to the bones.
Vitamin D – a messenger
Information is carried by a number of messengers inside your body, including proteins and fats. Vitamin D can also act like a messenger, telling the cells how much work to do.
Think of this like building a house. Proteins give specific instructions in the same way a carpenter may decide how best to connect
walls and windows and doors. Fats may serve as the building materials for the entire house. Vitamin D serves as the general contractor to
determine how much building should be done at any specific time.

53. The Unexpected Benefits of Vitamin C
by Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
A professor of mine once told me that newly graduated doctors have 100 cures for every disease. Experienced doctors often use one remedy for 100 diseases. It seems that this is proving to be quite true with our old friend, Vitamin C.
The Best Vitamin C
There are many types of Vitamin C. Some supplements contain diverse minerals while others contain related ingredients like bioflavonoids. There are good reasons for each of these additions. Yet, time has not proven the fancier forms to be superior to the natural, non-acidic form of Vitamin C (sodium-L-ascorbate).
The primary pathway for Vitamin C transport into the bloodstream is through the sodium transport channel. Now, sodium has a really bad reputation because many of us put too much salt (sodium chloride) on our food. But, the fruits and vegetables we eat are naturally very high in sodium. Our blood is naturally high in sodium. In fact, the sodium content of our blood is about 32 times greater than the potassium level in our blood. It is comparable to the sodium content in sea water.
Dr. Libby's Vital C has the best profile for absorption of this important nutrient.
New Uses For an Old Remedy
Three articles in medical literature recently caught my attention.

54. If You Take Statins, CoQ-10 Supplementation Is Absolutely Crucial
What exactly is CoEnzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10) and why is it so important to our continued good health? CoQ-10 is the perfect marriage of vitamins, antioxidants and Omega-3 fats, and is created when all of these important nutrients combine inside every one of your millions of cells. Many experts believe that CoQ-10 is the key spark to ignite the fuel that generates most of the total energy required by your body. And those organs with the highest energy requirements — such as the heart, lungs and liver — have the highest CoQ-10 concentrations.
Without enough CoQ-10, none of the systems in your body can function because they don't have enough fuel to do their jot. After age 50, you are basically "running on empty" when it comes to your body's production of CoQ-10. That's why supplementation is a must for anyone in that age group.
How can you tell if you're lacking in CoQ-10?
In the early stages, the deficiency may start showing up as a wide variety of dental problems. If you suffer from sensitive teeth or bleeding, swollen or shrinking gums, your body is telling you that you've already exceeded your ability to produce CoQ-10.
The CoQ-10 and statin connection
Several studies have confirmed that statin drugs such as Lipitor and Zocor interfere with CoQ-1O production, causing blood levels of CoQ-10 to drop. So, if you're taking statin drugs I for a heart condition, don't hesitate to discuss the benefits of CoQ-10 supplementation with your health- care provider.
What's the best CoQ-10 supplement for you?
There are many supplements on the market, but they are not all made alike, Remember: It's not how much you ingest, but how much you absorb that counts. TriVita's CoQ-10 is formulated to be in perfect balance for your body's nutritional needs.

57. Vitamin C, A Boost To Your Health & Well-Being
Summary
As cooler temperatures arrive, many people like to load up on Vitamin C to ward off colds.
Vitamin C and your body
Humans are one of the few mammals that can't produce Vitamin C. That's right; your body doesn't make or store this vital nutrient so you must replenish your body's supply of it every day. Why?
Bones – All the minerals in your bones require Vitamin C to turn them into health-building materials.
Blood – Your blood needs Vitamin C to convert iron into hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells.
Collagen – Vitamin C is required to form collagen; collagen in turn forms the body's connective tissues such as blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and bones.
Gums – Vitamin C helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Immune system function – Vitamin C activates immune cells called lymphocytes. Vitamin C also acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting your body from free radicals; these damaging molecules can result from metabolism, environmental toxins and stress. Free radicals have been implicated in conditions ranging from heart disease and cancer to arthritis and inflammation. In addition to protecting against free radicals, Vitamin C can help expand the lifespan of other antioxidants such as Vitamins A and E.
Vitamin C and diabetes
A study in the July 2008 Archives of Internal Medicine showed that those with higher Vitamin C levels had a 62% lower risk of developing Type II diabetes than those with lower levels of Vitamin C. That's great news considering that 24 million people in the United States alone have diabetes (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

58. TriVita Article: What's Your Homocysteine Level?
High homocysteine often leads to serious, debilitating conditions including:
•Stroke
•Heart Attack
•Coronary Heart Disease
•Diabetes
•Osteoporosis
•Dementia
•Alzheimer’s
Help reduce the risk of degenerative diseases
Homocysteine (HCY) is like cholesterol. An elevated homocysteine level is very dangerous… it can wreak havoc when it’s too high! You can’t feel dangerous, elevated HCY levels
The damage can rarely be reversed. Most North Americans are poorly prepared to handle the effects of a stroke. It’s hard to fully recover from a stroke, so that’s a good reason to start taking TnVita’s HCY Guard immediately to help reduce your risk.
When your homocysteine level is too high, your body suffers
During the methylation cycle, when HCY fails to recombine the “leftover’ protein into methionine, this excess HCY escapes into your bloodstream. It may begin to build up and cause destructive explosions to the most delicate tissues in your body. For example, it can damage your arteries, brain, bones and even your DNA.
The results can be devastating This is the kind of damage that high levels of homocysteine can cause inside your body and brain:
Thickening and hardening your arteries and weakening heart tissue —this can lead to strokes and heart attacks by shredding your most delicate tissues and inflicting thousands of tiny paper cuts inside your arteries and brain

59. TriVita Writes Why Multivitamins Are So Important As you review your diet of the past week, ask yourself, “Did I eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables every day?” (Five servings for children, seven servings for women and nine servings for men.) If you can say “yes” – congratulations! If you are like most people you did not reach that goal. And, if you are like most of us, you did not eat all of your fruits and vegetables from an organic source; so, the fruits and vegetables may have been lacking in nutrition. This is why I suggest TriVita NutraFruits. It's the quick and easy way to help you reach your goals.
They also help out when our diet is less than perfect.
However, supplements won’t make up for bad dietary choices. We simply must commit ourselves to eating healthier foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Still, most of us realize that we don’t always attend to our diet perfectly. We get busy and don’t always think ahead. After all, we eat to live; we don’t live to eat!
Balance
A multiple vitamin and mineral supplement should reflect the nutrient levels of a normal, healthy diet. In other words, if a nutrient normally appears in the diet at a particular level, this level should be reflected in the vitamin.

TriVita
Enhances Business Model to Support Launch of its New Product
Line
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, January 8th, 2009 - TriVita,
Inc. announced they are enhancing their direct-to-consumer business
model to feature a Share-and-Earn program for TriVita customers in
conjunction with the launch of their new Sonoran Bloom™ product line
scheduled to launch April 1st, 2009.
TriVita joined the
Direct Sellers Association in 2008 to evaluate the possibility of
offering a reselling business program to its Members.
"After
reviewing our long-term goals of taking our new Sonoran Bloom™
product line international, we knew we had to change from an
exclusively media-driven commerce model. This new channel of
distribution will help us grow not only domestically but also in
those countries whose media infrastructure and regulatory
restrictions make growth very challenging," said Michael Ellison,
TriVita CEO. "TriVita Members and Affiliates will have the
opportunity to tell others about their personal product experiences,
by sharing and sampling our products."
TriVita's new
Share-and-Earn program is backed by a significant compensation plan
that pays out a true 70% on all Sonoran Bloom™ products sold and
consumed by new Affiliates for ninety days. This increased
compensation opportunity is designed to help TriVita create new
product distribution channels as well as helping the new Affiliate
earn an extra $500 to $2,000 in their first 90 days.
"When
we created the Share-and-Earn compensation program we took the new
Affiliate into careful consideration knowing the nature of the high
fall-out rate in Direct Sales. We want to change that by helping new
Affiliates experience some level of success in their first 90 days.
So we created a compensation plan that would reward the enroller and
their team up to three generations but also reward the Directors and
even the Presidential Directors for their support of a new and
growing team in their organization," said Marcus Ellison, Senior VP
of Sales & Marketing.
TriVita is partnering with fellow
Direct Seller Association Member Supplier VERTEX to implement the
requisite internal restructuring.
"We have selected VERTEX to
support our new sales tax systems which include both software and
ongoing support services. We believe that with the support of the
Direct Sellers Association services and the long-standing successful
relationships it has with its member companies, we have a very
promising future for our growth goals," said Don Kurtenbach, CFO of
TriVita.
"The new Sonoran Bloom™ product line - which
includes a proprietary Opuntia liquid concentrate and Streptocantha
gel - have significant health applications and benefits," said
TriVita Chief Science Officer, Brazos Minshew.

Winter Blues Linked to Brain Chemical Levels
Toronto, Canada
Using positron emission tomography (PET) technology, researchers at the Centre for Addiction and Mental
Health in Toronto found that levels of serotonin (a mood-altering brain chemical) may be lower in the fall
and winter. Because serotonin helps regulate mood and energy levels, this may help researchers understand seasonal affective disorder and other seasonal mood changes.
Study author Jeffrey Meyer said that this discovery is "an important lead in understanding how season
changes serotonin levels. This offers an explanation for why some healthy people experience low mood
and energy in the winter, and why there is a regular reoccurrence of depressive episodes in fall and winter
in some vulnerable individuals. The next steps will be to understand what causes this change and how
to interfere with it."

62. TriVita Article: It's Resolution Season Again…
Are they the same as last year . . . and the year before that, and so on? What happens to many people this time of year is simple: They begin with the best, most sincere intentions to take charge of their lifestyle, but make too many unrealistic demands on themselves. Within a week or a month at most, all those promises to lose weight, sleep better, go jogging and so on have fallen by the wayside.
This year, whether you've made any resolutions or not, try something a little different. [TriVita's] VitaJournal has collected a number of great suggestions for you to try, suggestions that if you put them into practice, will help you improve your Physical, Emotional and Spiritual health almost instantly.
You can try every suggestion, or just take a couple from each page. What matters is that you try. Read through each suggestion and note which ones appeal to you, then get up and give them a shot. If one doesn't work, try another. The bottom line is that making healthy changes to your lifestyle depends entirely upon you and the choices you make. Realize, too, that each of these aspects of health and well-being affects the other two. Improve your spiritual health, and your emotional and physical health will improve as well! This is a new year - how about a new you to enjoy it?
Here are a few resolution ideas for you:
- Go to bed 10 minutes earlier every night; then increase this amount by 10 minutes every week until you are getting to sleep an hour earlier.
- Keep eight 8-ounce bottles of water chilled in your refrigerator, and drink all eight over the course of a day. Try this for one month and see how you feel.
- Go for a ten-minute walk every day. Then add 10 minutes every week until you are walking an hour each day.
- Take one [of TriVita's] Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid or [TriVita] Vital4 each day after breakfast.
- Lower your blood pressure by taking several slow, deep breaths several times a day.
- Commit to not taking in any caffeine for two hours before bed; then push that goal back 30 minutes per week until you are free from the addiction to caffeine. (Don't think you're addicted? Stop all caffeine intake cold-turkey and see how your body responds.)
- Clear your bedroom of all distractions to allow yourself an easier time getting to sleep. This includes moving the TV to another room (or getting rid of it entirely).

65. TriVita Article: Don't Be Slowed Down by Weight Loss Speed Bumps
by Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
This is the perfect time of year for an encouraging article on keeping your weight loss goals. Why?
Because nearly half of all people in North America make New Year's resolutions - and the most common resolution is to lose weight.
Within a few weeks the number of people sticking to their resolve declines dramatically. Given the importance of improving our
behavior, an encouraging word from an ally may be just the thing we all need to keep our resolve!
What do you do when you hit a speed bump?
The answer to this question does not lie in the "how, when, what" of weight loss. The answer lies in the "why." Your personal "why" gives you energy. It inspires you, motivates you, and drives you to complete your goal.
Remember to let your desire fuel your action; let your actions harmonize with your sense of purpose. Simply be resolved to live a life of purpose and you will have the energy to get beyond the speed bumps.
Common setbacks
Unsupportive family: Losing weight with an uncooperative family is very difficult. In fact, diet failure is far more common among people with kids at home than among empty-nesters. A great solution is to turn those sources of distraction into cheerleaders. Recruit your family into your support group. Ask them for help and you may be surprised how helpful a supportive family can be.
Parties and gatherings:
Parties and family gatherings are another trigger for setbacks. Food and a festive environment are catalysts for overeating and skipping
exercise. Careful planning in advance can really help with food selection and an exercise schedule. And if you do overindulge, remember the "calories in, calories out" rule and increase your exercise for a week or two to burn off the extra calories.
Emotional speed bumps: Depression, discouragement and despondency are also common triggers for diet failure. Remembering TriVita's 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness can be a good antidote. For instance, Essential #6 teaches us that we need to give and receive love for excellent health. Love moves us to commit ourselves to a life of purpose. Purpose is the reason for action. Therefore, love can help us avoid fear, shame and doubt.
Conclusion
When we commit ourselves to such noble pursuits, do they not deserve our very best attention? We need to define our purpose as the foundation for success. Purpose is an important motivation to help us reshape our thinking. Purpose is the antidote to self-sabotage.
Ponder each of TriVita's 10 life-changing essentials for healthy living.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is a progressive condition that destroys brain cells. People with Alzheimer's disease slowly lose the ability to learn, function, and remember.
Causes
The cause of Alzheimer's disease is not yet known. Studies suggest that two main mechanisms may result in the clinical picture of the disease:
- Plaques—abnormal deposits of a substance called beta amyloid in different areas of the brain
- Neurofibrillary tangles—twisted fibers within nerve cells
Risk Factors
A risk factor increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.
Risk factors include:
- Age: 65 and older
- Previous serious, traumatic brain injury
- Lower educational achievement
- Down's syndrome
- Down's syndrome in a first-degree relative
- Women under 35 who give birth to a child with Down's syndrome
- Smoking
- Family history of Alzheimer's disease
- Presence of a certain variety type of apolipoprotein (APOE-e4)
- Depression
- Elevated levels of homocysteine
- Heart disease.
Researchers are studying the following to see if they are related to Alzheimer's disease:
- Poor nutrition and vitamin deficiency in childhood
- Exposure to electromagnetic fields
- Excess metal in the blood, especially zinc, copper, aluminum, and iron
- Certain viral infections
- Diabetes
- High Cholesterol.
Symptoms
The disease begins as mild memory lapses but moves to profound loss of memory and function. Alzheimer's disease is divided into three stages:
- Early
- Intermediate
- Severe.

67. TriVita Article: Is the Sun Our Enemy? Humans have existed on earth for many thousands of years. Until recently, we spent our days in the sun. Now, physicians and scientists say that sun exposure is "bad" for us. Is that true? When did the sun become our enemy? How much is enough and what is the best way to maintain balance when it comes to sun exposure?
Sunlight: crucial for life, health and happiness!
- Life – It is crucial for life because all life on earth as we know it depends (to a greater or lesser extent) on photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the way plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen through chlorophyll and sunlight.
- Health – It is crucial for health because sunlight creates Vitamin D as it interacts with our skin.
- Happiness – It is crucial for happiness because sunlight activates hormones in the brain that create a sense of euphoria.
Humans are diurnal: we are awake in the daytime and asleep at night. We are designed to live in sunlight. Our skin interacts with sunlight to create Vitamin D, an essential part of our metabolism.
Overexposure to the sun creates oxidative stress similar to radiation burns from a nuclear bomb. And why not? The sun itself is a huge nuclear furnace. This radiation burn will start a chain reaction in the melanocyte and other cells. This may lead to cancer in a year or two or in a decade or two. Oxidative stress from sunburn is insidious and relentless.
Where's the balance?
The skyrocketing incidence of diabetes, osteoporosis and certain cancers definitely says that we are not getting enough Vitamin D. The increase in insomnia and seasonal depression tells us that we are not getting enough early morning sun.
We need more sunlight.
Now, how do we make it safe?

68. Another TriVita Article: How to Help Avoid Liver and Kidney Pollutants by Dr Brazos Minshew
In a previous Weekly Wellness Report we discussed the toxins that come into our body through our drinking water. What happens to these toxins when they enter our body? Can toxins lead to liver or kidney disease? What are some early signs of liver and kidney toxicity?
Early warning signs
Your liver and kidneys cooperate with another detoxification organ: the lungs. Signs that your liver and kidneys are struggling and pushing the toxic overload through your lungs can include:
- Breathing problems
- Bad breath
- Frequent lung and sinus infections
- Allergies.
Toxicity in the liver and kidneys affect another organ of detoxification: your skin. If your detoxification system becomes overloaded, your body will try to compensate for this overload by pushing some of this waste out through your skin. Early signs of this include:
- Itchy skin
- Bad-smelling perspiration
- Discolorations
Eventually, you might even experience a breakdown in your skin when it can no longer handle this toxic load. A good example of this: When someone with diabetes has a toxic level of glucose, cracks can appear in the skin of the feet.
What about kidney/liver disease?
Kidneys
Kidneys filter your blood and ensure that proteins and minerals are in the right balance. Too many proteins from an unbalanced, low-carb diet may injure the kidneys. Too many minerals, such as too much phosphorus from soft drinks will injure your kidneys, and too much sugar will damage your kidneys beyond repair.
So, for good, healthy kidneys:
- Drink pure water
- Eat a balanced, healthy diet
- Avoid concentrated sugars.
Many toxins can destroy the kidneys, such as toxic levels of homocysteine and glucose. Still, one of the most common kidney toxins is aspirin, so it should be taken in moderation.

69. Critical Information About Your Bone Health Summary
Learn about the processes that break down and rebuild bone to help prevent bone loss and maintain bone health
Your body is constantly changing. Bone remodeling is a natural process that breaks down and rebuilds bone
While you're growing, the nutrients you take in from food contribute to your body's growth - including your bone growth. This process is called modeling. During childhood and adolescence, if you don't give your bones the nutrients they need to grow (primarily calcium and phosphorus), the structure of your bones won't be as strong when you reach adulthood. Instead of a healthy, dense structure your bones may be porous, which can contribute to breakdown and fragility of your bones (osteoporosis) later in life.
By the time you reach your adult size, around age 20, the growth (modeling) process ends and a new process called "bone remodeling" begins. This is a normal process that breaks down and rebuilds bone. In the best circumstances, you've contributed enough calcium and phosphorous to your bones while you were growing, and the food you eat and the supplements you take now will contain enough calcium and phosphorous to rebuild the bone and store away these minerals for future use.If you don't eat foods that contain calcium and phosphorous or take supplements, your bones will experience a deficiency. Every time these essential minerals are withdrawn and there isn't a mineral deposit made to help your body rebuild bones, your bones weaken. Natural processes within your body guarantee that your bones will weaken over time
After 30, if the normal remodeling process is allowed to continue, your bones will naturally break down at a faster rate than they're rebuilt. If you don't add additional nutrients that are proven to rebuild bone, your bones will grow increasingly weak, will eventually become brittle (osteoporosis), and you'll be at greater risk for fractures. Most supplements on the market only maintain current bone structure. There are three primary reasons why you need a supplement that will rebuild bone:

70. The Truth About Alzheimer's Disease In recognition of Alzheimer's Awareness Month the follow article is an excerpt taken from November 2008 VitaJournal Pg 22.
Summary
Alzheimer's Disease -
Separating Myths from Facts During National Alzheimer's Awareness Month, some strategies that will help you ward off disease
by Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer
Myth: Alzheimer's disease is genetic; there is nothing we can do about it.Truth: AD is the accumulation of many years of damage to your brain, causing plaque to build up and nerves to tangle. There are prevention strategies that work to help reduce the damage to our brain and to reduce the chances of AD. The chances of being diagnosed with AD increase as we age. AD affects about half of people age 85 and older.
A gene defect that predisposes a person to AD is called the MTHFR defect. This gene pumps out HCY in very high amounts. What is the solution for elevated HCY? Foods and food supplements rich in B vitamins. (A published clinical trial of HCY Guard demonstrated that it reduced elevated HCY levels by 35% in just 42 days!)
So, while there are definite genetic markers to help us determine our AD risk, there are also proven strategies to help us protect against the damage that may lead to AD. Reduce your risk by reducing toxic, inflammatory, brain-destroying levels of homocysteine.

72. Women, Make Health Your Top Priority Summary
Taking care of yourself is essential to living a longer, healthier life
By Dr. Tammy Pon, M.D.
Only a few short years ago the life expectancy for women reached a peak in modern history, with most women living to an average 79 years of age! In honor of this very special issue that addresses women's health, I'd like to discuss a few of these issues and the strategies needed to meet this new future of longevity and vitality.
Heart disease
Heart attacks and heart disease kill more women than any other cause. Women have a death rate from heart attacks that is 70% higher than men. There are two reasons for this: One is that a heart attack in a man does not look like a heart attack in a woman. The second is that women's heart attack symptoms are often misdiagnosed in the emergency room (ER).
A heart attack in a woman is not always the "elephant sitting on my chest" feeling that accompanies a heart attack in men. Instead, there may be an "impending sense of doom" accompanied by shortness of breath, fatigue and low back pain, jaw pain and shoulder pain. Also, if a man comes into the emergency room sweating, with shortness of breath and chest pain the ER staff will automatically assume "heart attack." When a woman enters the ER with similar symptoms, many in the ER staff will assume "panic attack!" The delay in treatment to differentiate these two conditions may cost a woman her life.
A woman is not a man. Yet, medicine assumes that the heart attack symptoms commonly presented by men are the standard for measuring ER reactions. With aging women outnumbering aging men by more than 2:1, it's time for emergency room staff to be more aware of women's unique health needs.

73. What Is Pandemic, Flu And How To Protect Yourself Summary
Avian flu or "bird flu" has been getting a lot of attention in the news. Some experts are concerned that it could turn into a worldwide outbreak among humans – a pandemic. Since 1997, the H5N1 bird flu strain has killed millions of birds. Understanding the facts about pandemics can also help you better prepare for this potentially life-threatening disease.
What is Pandemic Flu?
Pandemic flu is a term used to describe a virulent human flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Currently, there is no pandemic flu, but health officials are concerned that the bird flu which has caused about 250 illnesses and deaths among people in Asia, Africa, and Europe could become a pandemic flu.
What is the modern history of Pandemics?
• 1918-1919 – This outbreak of Spanish flu was linked to bird flu, as is the current pandemic threat. It caused an estimated 50 million deaths worldwide.
• 1957-1958 – This pandemic was caused by the Asian flu. It was moderately severe and caused nearly 2 million deaths worldwide.
• 1968-1969 – The Hong Kong flu caused this pandemic which claimed 700,000 deaths worldwide.
There have been several pandemic threats, including swine flu in 1976, Russian flu in 1977, and the current threat of bird flu.
How serious is the current bird flu threat?
Influenza pandemics typically occur at approximately 25-30 year intervals. A flu pandemic occurs when a virus changes so drastically from previous strains that people have little natural immunity, and large numbers of people get sick or die. Because there would be little natural immunity to the bird flu, the effects could be devastating

More ... 77. New Hope For Diabetes Sufferers
Proper nutrition, exercise and vitamin supplementation can help people with diabetes enjoy a healthy, productive life By Dr. Samuel N. Grief, M.D., CCFP, FCFP
Diabetes is a silent enemy
Every year, millions of Americans live their lives not noticing that they have subtle warning signs of diabetes. These less obvious signs, such as change in vision, fatigue, sleepiness and trouble fighting off infections, may not necessarily make you think of diabetes… but they should! It is usually the more obvious symptoms, such as unintentional weight loss, excess thirst and urination and fainting that signal the onset of diabetes and spur people to action.
Remember, if you are diagnosed with diabetes, life does not end! However, change is required in order to correct some of the imbalances that led to the development of diabetes in the first place.
First, take stock of your weight
Obesity causes approximately 60% of all cases of type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes. Losing weight is very likely to lessen the need for prescription medicine to control diabetes. Second, learning to count carbohydrates is necessary for all people with diabetes in order to keep the blood sugar relatively stable and free of any wild fluctuations. Limiting carbohydrate intake may also minimize the need for insulin.
Third, exercise will help improve your body's natural sensitivity to its own or to any injected insulin you provide. Many people are not sure why they end up with diabetes. For most, a combination of genetic predisposition and lifestyle habits sets off a slow and steady decline in pancreatic function. This decline is inevitable unless the above lifestyle modifications are introduced. Taking supplements to help keep diabetes away is tempting. But do they really work?

More ... 80. Study Confirms The Value Of Adaptogen 10 Plus
Our research team discovered that it helps raise nitric oxide levels – essential for good health
By Dr. Nathan S. Bryan
Nitric oxide or NO is one of the most important molecules in our body. Like a policeman directing traffic in a busy intersection, nitric oxide directs the communication between the busiest cells in the body: brain cells, blood cells, immune system cells and cells from every body system where communication is critical. Nitric oxide is so important that no organ in your body could function without it. In fact, a Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to three scientists in 1998 responsible for discovering its actions. It keeps our blood pressure normal, helps us think clearly, helps our body fight off infections, and even prevents the development of blood clots and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Many of the “diseases of aging” are no more than a deficiency of nitric oxide.
Recently, my team tested Adaptogen 10 Plus for nitric oxide activity. This study helps confirm the incredible value of Adaptogen 10 Plus. We discovered that it contains natural NO metabolites that help to restore normal nitric oxide biochemistry within our body. This important benefit is in addition to its high antioxidant capacity and adaptive stress molecules.
As we age, our body gradually loses its ability to produce nitric oxide. Stress, pollution and a nutrient-deficient diet also reduce our nitric oxide reserves. A healthy diet, sleep, exercise and the rest of the 10 Essentials (see pg. 2) contribute to nitric oxide activity - and to good health!
As a professor of medicine, I supervise cardiovascular research in the heart health field. My field of specialty is nitric oxide: how to get it and how to keep it. The people in our research center suffer from a host of nitric oxide-related disorders including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease - the list seems endless.
In every case I see that the higher we can raise the nitric oxide levels, the better the patient responds. Restoring nitric oxide production has become one of the main strategies at treating and protecting against many diseases.
More ... 81. Recognizing and Avoiding, Toxic Friendships
They can drain you physically, emotionally and spiritually
Do you have a friend that is always putting you down? When you spend time with certain friends, do you feel worse about yourself afterward? You could have a toxic friendship.
What exactly is a "toxic" friendship? It is one that leaves you feeling drained, stifled and marginalized. This could be because they constantly put you down or perhaps they always have drama in their lives - which they expect you to listen to. These friends rarely offer support and in fact, the relationship is often one-sided, with all the focus on them. So-called "toxic" relationships can do more than make you feel bad. They can even affect your health, leading to everything from migraines and tension to stomachaches and depression.
How to get out of a toxic relationship
Toxic friendships can become so bad that you start to dread even hearing from the person. You ignore their phone calls and make up excuses to avoid them. At this point - and perhaps even earlier - it is time to consider getting out of the relationship.
1. Acknowledge that the relationship is toxic. Then ask yourself what you did to allow the relationship to reach this point.
2. Talk to a neutral party. Consult with someone who doesn’t know your toxic friend and explain the situation. Often, a neutral viewpoint can help us see things that we didn’t before. They may be able to offer advice on whether the friendship can be healed or if it needs to be ended.
3. Set boundaries. Make healthy choices when determining what you will and won’t take from someone. Talk to your toxic friend and let them know your concerns about the relationship. Also, firmly let them know how things must change.

Read how TriVita Sublingual B-12, B-6 & folic Acid helps with this condition
by Dr. Scott Conard, M.D.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) can cover several behavioral problems: inattentiveness, being over-active or too impulsive, or a combination of these. While most research into ADHD has focused on children, recent research suggests that the symptoms continue into adulthood in up to 50% of adults who had the disorder in childhood. Some ADHD-type behaviors are to be expected in children, but when several symptoms occur that exceed the normal range for a child’s age, a diagnosis of ADHD may be made. If you’re a concerned parent or grandparent, you should be aware of the signs and symptoms. ADHD isn’t restricted to children. It’s a long-term condition, but adults can often better control their behavior, and disguise their symptoms.
ADHD symptoms are grouped into two categories:
1. Inattentiveness
2. Hyperactivity and impulsivity
Some children with ADHD may have a combination of these symptoms.
The symptoms that make up ADHD: lack of attention, surplus of activity and impulsive behavior
Inattentiveness

5. Has trouble organizing tasks and activities
6. Resists activities such as schoolwork that require sustained mental focus
7. Tends to lose items needed for tasks or activities, such as toys, pencils or books

Seasonal Affective Disorder and B-12: The mood connection
by Dr. Scott Conard
For some people, the winter months bring mood changes that are seasonal but have little to do with the spirit of the holidays. These people may seem sad because they have SAD: seasonal affective disorder. Also called seasonal depression, this condition is often blamed on exposure to less sunlight during shorter days and colder winter temperatures.
While studies continue to find the causes and treatments for SAD, one thing is clear: People who have this mood disorder show symptoms that are very much like depression.
Does SAD affect someone you know?
Symptoms of SAD, according to the American Psychiatric Association, can include:
• Excessive sleeping, overeating and weight gain during the fall/winter months
• Extreme fatigue or inability to keep up a normal schedule
• Feelings of sadness, loss of feelings, apathy and irritability.
That last item is especially interesting to medical professionals like me who pursue the connections between mood troubles and B vitamins. As you may know, studies indicate that people with a B-12 deficiency can experience symptoms including mood swings, mental confusion, forgetfulness and even psychotic behavior, like seeing and/or hearing things.
For some time, evidence indicated that it was older adults who tended to have Vitamin B-12 deficiencies, but now we know more. As I wrote in the VitaJournal last month, one study showed that people as young as 26 may be just as lacking in B-12 as some people over 65! This study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, went on to say that regardless of age, those who didn’t supplement with Vitamin B-12 were twice as likely to be deficient as those who did.

The holiday season is a time of joy we look forward to, but it also represents a time of heightened stress. Stress can have a negative effect on us, both physically and mentally, so it’s important to find ways to cope with it. It’s easy to turn to unhealthy behaviors such as over-eating or smoking, but this will only worsen the problem. This year, commit to make a change in your life that will benefit you positively.
There are several stress-relieving techniques that will help trigger the body to relax. Practiced regularly (daily is best), these techniques will help reduce stress and boost feelings of happiness and calm. Choose the one that best suites you.
Deep breathing
• Sit in a comfortable position, with your back straight. Place one hand over your chest, the other over your abdomen.
• Breathe in through your nose, and notice as your hand on your stomach moves. The hand on your chest should move very little. This means you are breathing in from your stomach and filling your lungs with air.
• Exhale through your mouth to let out all the air (you might count to get a good rhythm). Notice how your stomach goes back in.
• Concentrate on peaceful, deep breathing one to two times a day for stress relief.
Guided imagery
• Close your eyes and use your senses to imagine a serene and tranquil place. This could be a tropical island, a quiet cabin in the woods, a favorite childhood spot; any place that makes you feel calm and at ease.
• See the details around you (the sun rising, the palm trees waving). Hear the wind blow or the waves reaching the shore. Feel the cool air on your skin, or the water at your feet. Smell the flowers or trees beside you. Taste the clean, fresh air.
• Whenever you feel stressed, take a few minutes to close your eyes and think of this peaceful place. Your mind will travel there with you for a moment, and your body will begin to relax.

More ... 85. Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema
by Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer
A man with emphysema was asked about his experience with the disease. He answered by describing the desperation of never getting a full breath. "What if you went to take a breath and nothing happened?" he asked. That is what having emphysema is like: you breathe, but nothing happens. Oxygen cannot get in and carbon dioxide can’t get out. The result is a feeling of slow suffocation.
Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are also called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These two conditions affect more than 25 million people in North America. COPD is the #4 killer right now and, with the current rate of increase, it is destined to be the #3 killer in just a few short years.
Common causes
Emphysema is triggered by smoking and irritants in the air. Emphysema traps carbon dioxide in the lungs and prevents oxygen from getting into the bloodstream. An interesting facet of our lung physiology is that the urge to breathe is triggered by an increase in carbon dioxide, not a deficiency of oxygen. As carbon dioxide builds up, the urge to breathe reaches a point of panic and desperation. This is the experience of people with emphysema.
Chronic bronchitis is caused by inflammation in the lungs from pollution, allergy, infection and certain enzyme deficiencies. Often, medications that open the airways and bring relief to people that suffer with chronic bronchitis cause great distress when they wear off and the airways snap closed again. The rate of COPD from chronic bronchitis is increasing every year as pollution and allergies increase.
Reducing your risk
Reducing inflammation. People that are prone to inflammation are more likely to contract COPD. Therefore, helping your body reduce inflammation with nutrients such as Omega oils is vitally important. OmegaPrime uses perilla seed oil as a specific anti-inflammatory for the respiratory system.
Avoiding irritants. Triggers for COPD include smoke and pollution. One key to respiratory health is isolation from these irritants.

No wonder it’s such an important part of our OmegaPrime formulation
By Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer
What would you think of a food that could help balance your immune system, help reduce your cholesterol and improve your ability to breathe? Perilla seed oil is just such a food!
Perilla seeds have been used as a source of food and medicine for thousands of years. As interest in traditional remedies has grown in modern medicine, scientific studies have been carried out on perilla seeds as a possible remedy for allergies.
This is notable because the number of people diagnosed with allergies (allergic rhinitis) has significantly increased in recent years. A person experiences an allergy attack when the tiny cells that line the sinuses burst. These are called "mast cells" and they are filled with histamines, the substances that cause allergy symptoms. Pollen and other allergens rupture these cells and release the histamines in large amounts. Anything that stabilizes these cells and keeps them from bursting gives welcome relief from allergy misery.
What scientists are learning is that the oil from perilla seeds is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It not only reduces inflammation in the sinuses, but in all areas where mast cells release inflammatory histamines: the sinuses, lungs, joints, intestines and skin. So, perilla seed oil acts as an anti-inflammatory to relieve allergies, gastritis and even asthma.
That’s why I put perilla seed oil in OmegaPrime: different oils reduce inflammation in different tissues. Fish oil reduces inflammation in the arteries, flax oil in the reproductive tissues, evening primrose oil in the brain and bones and perilla seed oil in the sinuses, lungs and intestines. Is there any solid research on these applications for perilla seed oil? Absolutely!
Studies conducted on people with asthma showed that perilla seed reduced the inflammation in the lungs, reduced the hyperactive immune system leukotrienes in the lungs and improved lung volume. At the same time, doctors measured cholesterol levels and found that perilla seed oil reduced total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. Also, perilla seed oil raised the levels of beneficial, protective HDL cholesterol.

"I went from 200 pounds to 160 pounds… I truly feel terrific."
"After leaving my law enforcement career of 16 years, I began a desk management job. With no need to exercise, eating became comfortable. I went from 170 pounds to 200 pounds in about one year. I woke one day and looked in the mirror and saw a once lean person rapidly turning obese. With heart disease and other problems in mind, a diet seemed the only solution."
"I have been using TriVita’s vanilla and chocolate flavor Leanology shakes about 4-5 months, with surprising results.I went from 200 pounds to 160 pounds. In conjunction with using the shake, I began walking and slowly working into jogging 4-5 times a week. Cookies, cake, fried foods and heavy meals look awful now. They have been replaced, gradually, with bananas, oranges, salads and yogurt. I truly feel terrific. My blood pressure is down and my energy level is up. I tried other diet pills and shakes with little or no results.Leanology truly fills me up throughout the day.
Thank you, TriVita!"- Jason F. Scottsdale, AZ

These easy-to-use tips can help you keep your cool when you get hot under the collarStress can get to you everywhere… at home, work and even when you’re supposed to be having fun. We're all stressed out to certain degrees… but some of us handle stress better than others. Most of us think that stress is caused by big problems, but that’s not always the case. Actually, stress can be caused by the constant accumulation of little irritations. Examples include misplacing items such as your keys, being slighted by someone in a conversation, or getting frustrated by a slow moving car ahead of you. Anytime your body tenses or you “blow a gasket” your stress level builds. Add up all the daily stresses and you can feel exhausted, even without physical activity.
When your stress levels go up, your enjoyment of life goes down. Plus, stress can create a wide variety of physical and emotional problems such as:
• Increased blood pressure, heart problems and nervous tics
• Irritability, constant fatigue and disturbed sleep
• Lowered immunity, headaches and muscle aches.
So, what can you do about stress?
You can start by correcting those bad habits that cause added stress in your life. Here are some of the more common habits – and some helpful ways to correct them:
if you’re disorganized – you may be irritated every time you can’t find something you need. To correct this bad habit:
• Use lists and notes to write down the things you need to do – it’ll help keep you organized, focused and on top of things
• Avoid clutter by tidying up your home, your desk and your car – this will make it easier to find important items without going into a frenzy
• File important papers when you receive them, instead of heaping them in different piles and shred them when you don’t need them anymore
• Store your car keys and cell phone in the same place every time, so you can easily find them – it’s a small way to rid yourself of frantic runarounds.
if you’re constantly running late – you’re likely to feel agitated, bothered and possibly anxious each time you get to your destination. To correct this habit:

Simple ways to cut back and save now
With the economic turmoil swirling around us, it’s natural to worry about your personal finances. Many people are already on a limited or fixed income. But by taking steps to cut spending, and by following a sound budget and savings plan, you’ll be well-prepared to stand on solid financial ground in 2009.
First things first: create a budget
The first step to getting your finances in order is to create a budget; this will help you figure out how much you can reasonably spend, and how much you can save. (Of course, you’ll especially want to track and control your expenses during the holidays.) Here are the budgeting basics:
1. Total your monthly income.
2. Subtract your monthly expenses – this should include house payments, car payments, utility bills, insurance, etc.
3. Allocate money for savings, groceries, fuel, entertainment, etc.
4. Keep track of your spending and review your budget every month to see where you can make any necessary modifications.
A penny saved is a penny earned
Financial experts recommend that you have enough savings to cover expenses for at least three months. But don’t stop there if you can do more!
• Allocate a set amount of money to contribute to a retirement plan each month (10% of your income is recommended). If your employer doesn’t offer a plan, consider Individual Retirement Accounts, which are offered by a variety of financial institutions including banks and credit unions.
• Have your employer direct-deposit a designated amount from each paycheck into a savings account. This will give you a nice buffer for those unexpected expenses like home and auto repairs.
• Create a special savings account for birthday and holiday gifts.
More ... 90. Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs: Do They Help?
Healthcare professionals continue to debate the benefits of statin drugs. Statin drugs have become big business. The use of these cholesterol-lowering drugs increased by 156% between 2000 and 2005, rising from 15.8 million people to 29.7 million people.
Statins are currently the best-selling medicines in history, used by more than 13 million Americans and more than 12 million additional patients around the world, producing $27.8 billion in sales in 2006. Half of that amount went to Pfizer alone for its leading statin, Lipitor.
North Americans are bombarded with messages from doctors, pharmaceutical companies and the media saying that high levels of bad cholesterol are the ticket to an early grave and must be brought down now. Yet, many respected healthcare professionals question the benefits of these drugs. They point out that different clinical trials were biased or only showed marginal benefits. Some researchers even have doubts about the need to drive down cholesterol levels in the first place.
The debate about the effectiveness of statins continues and each side offers statistics to support their position. Statin proponents point to studies that suggest these medications may prevent heart attacks and strokes among people who don’t already have cardiovascular disease or elevated cholesterol levels. And there are even studies that claim statins can help protect against dementia or Alzheimer's.
However, there are just as many respected healthcare professionals who feel that statin drugs are unnecessary and possibly even dangerous. Some of these people question whether cholesterol automatically is the culprit in most heart diseases.
"Cholesterol is just one of the risk factors for coronary disease," explains Dr. Ronald M. Krauss, director of atherosclerosis research at the Oakland Research Institute, in a Business Week article. "Higher LDL levels do help set the stage for heart disease by contributing to the buildup of plaque in arteries. But something else has to happen before people get heart disease. When you look at patients with heart disease, their cholesterol levels are not that much higher than those without heart disease."
Still others point to the ever-growing body of evidence that shows potentially serious side effects from statins. The most common side effect is muscle pain and weakness, most likely due to the depletion of CoQ-10, a nutrient that supports muscle function. Some healthcare providers suggest taking a CoQ-10 supplement to help protect against statin side effects. To find out more about TriVita's CoEnzyme Q-10 product, call a Wellness Consultant at 1-800-991-7116. Other potential side effects from large statin doses may include anemia, acidosis, frequent fevers, cataracts and lessening of mental acuity.
More ... 91. Arthritis: Want Healthy Joints? Keep On Moving!
The most common diagnosis in North America – more common than the common cold – is arthritis. This condition begins when old cartilage cells are cleared away faster than they are replaced with new ones. This deficit of new cells can be likened to spending just a little more money than you deposit each month. Sooner or later, your account will be empty. With arthritis, old cells are taken from a joint faster than new cells are added. Sooner or later, the joint becomes dry.
Healthy joints
Joint spaces are filled mostly with water. There are small, magnetic proteins embedded in collagen that constantly push each other apart. This suction creates a vacuum that is soon filled with water and nutrients. Every time you move the joint, some of this water is squeezed out along with waste from the joint cells. Between movements – when the joint is at rest – it once again draws in water and nutrients.
Sick joints
Many different things can interfere with the balance of cell life and death: trauma to the joints, toxins from infections and our environment, nutrient imbalances that create a deficit in the structure of joint cells, and stress that suppresses new joint cell formation. All of these influences can slow the production of new cartilage cells and hasten the death of existing cells.
When a person lacks sufficient nutrients to make complete, healthy cells, immature and imbalanced cells will be produced instead. These may function for a time; however, sooner or later they will shatter and splinter into fractions of protein in your joint capsule. These act like slivers of broken glass. As they slice through certain “guardian” cells (called mast cells) large amounts of histamine are released and inflammation sets in. You can often hear the grinding in your joints when they become inflamed.

More... 93. Does STRESS Top Your Holiday List?
Nobody's holiday wish list includes stress, but there it is, right at the top. It thrives on planning and shopping, get-togethers and gift-giving (and guessing), houseguests and house decorating. And all this, on top of our daily "to-do" lists for job, family and home.
What's more, we're "supposed" to also be upbeat and joyful. Even when our nerves are jingle-jangling more than a sackful of sleigh bells, there's pressure everywhere to be merry and bright. Stress can just take all the "happy" out of holidays – if we let it. There are proven ways to squelch stress. A good start: recognizing the causes of stress at this time of year.
What's stretching you too thin this season?
Experts tell us that there are three main issues that often lead to holiday stress or depression:
1. Money
If you feel strapped for cash most of the time, you probably feel worse this time of year. Between gifts and travel, food and entertainment, it's easy to put even more strain on finances.
2. Relationships
With family and other loved ones around, old tensions and resentments can flare. (See article on Forgiveness, page 18). On the other hand, being without someone close at the holidays can tend to make us feel sad or lonely.
3. Health
The holiday frenzy can boost stress, which disturbs sleep and harms our health. And, the temptations of the season can steal into our exercise time while we're eating and drinking too much. This is why it's smart to keep (or start) taking Adaptogen 10 at this time of year. Their stress-fighting nutrients help you feel calm while they protect your health.
